Most lifespans are set by the amount of cell divisions that an organism will undergo in life, so mammals that live, or rather develop, faster, die quicker.
Quicker gestation, quicker maturation, quicker death.
Mice mature in a few weeks, elephants a few years, dogs a few months, etc.
