Hummm... I guess it depends on who the person is and why you're trying to get to know them.  There are a series of question you'd ask a potential suitor that you wouldn't ask a friend-to-be.  In either case, these are safe questions... Where'd you grow up?  What do you do for a living?  What school did you attend?  What did you major in?  What do you like to do for fun.  Those are pretty generic but typical all the same...

We all know the standards as have been mentioned already, and I do believe that we ask people who we meet certain questions in an attempt to guage how compatible we might be to each other. But be aware, we don't all accurately portray who we are!

Generally, ask about where the person is from, what they do for a living, did you attend college, etc. If you're looking to delve a little deeper, I think these are good questions:

    What was your childhood like?
    Do you have any hobbies?
What are you most interested in?
What matters to you in life?
If you could only have one book with you on a deserted island, what book would you want it to be?
