Hi. Is the name "Njeri" originally Kikuyu, not Swahili? Could elaborate on its meaning, origin? Thx.
Various a few different meanings and language affiliations can be found for this name on, well, the internet. I'd really appreciate your help!
The name Njeri does not feature among the Swahili of the East African Coast.
Njeri is from the verb - cera (take a walk), gucera (to take a walk; to roam about; to travel outside your home). Njeri means "that which walks about."
Njeri was one of the Daughters of Mumbi - the mother of all Kikuyu. She is the initiator of the "Aceera" Clan which some scholars claim is derived from the Akamba people who are known to have been ardent travelers around the East and Central African region.
Derivatives of this name are - Gacheri (small Njeri), Wanjeri (of Njeri) and Waceera.
According to LSB leakey, Njeri was the third born after Wanjiru and Wambui. Her other sisters and the clans they founded are as listed below. The clan name comes after the hyphen:
4. Wanjikũ - Anjiku
5. Nyambura - Ambura or Ethaga
6. Wairimũ - Airimũ or Agathigia or Aicakamũyũ
7. Waithĩra - Athirandũ
8. Wangarĩ- Angarĩ or Aithe-Kahuno
9. Wangũi - Angũi or Aithiegeni
