    The mitochondria is the powerplant of your cells.   Virtually every cell contain mitochondria.   Muscles, brain, and heart cells can contain hundreds or thousands of these mitochrondria in one cell. 

    They generate cellular energy known as ATP ( Adenosine Triphosphate).   

    All I can say is that if you want to be healthy, you must keep your mitochondria healthy.  I wrote about a couple of supplements that boost energy by supporting the mitochrondria here ...

    Mitochondria are the seat of cellular respiration (ATP molecules are produced , so they are known as power houses of the cell). They help in the synthesis of important biomolecules like cytochromes, steroids etc, Mitochondria produce its own proteins from its DNA and ribosomes. They also regulate the calcium ion concentration in the cell. Mitochondria contain their own DNA, they is responsible for extrachromosomal inheritance.
