Lysosomes help digest particles that are in the cell and could break down worn out cells.

    Hi Teresa,

They break down all kind of components within a cell, which are redundant or need te be recycled. Lysosomes have special enzymes that can do that.

Waste disposal is a major problem in our day today life. The processes involving recovering and recycling is the priority for efficient waste management.  Inside the cell there is an efficient compartment that digest waste material produced by metabolic activities of the cell and that is lysosome, the incinerator of the cell.

Lysosomes help in intracellular scavenging. It's enzymes can digest all types of macromolecules. If a cell is dead in our body then the lysosomes inside the cell will burst and cell will be digested. Thus during prolonged absence of food , it digests cell of body to provide energy. It also helps in metamorphosis in tadpole larva. A lysosomal enzyme cathepsin , help in digestion of tail during metamorphosis.
