Whats the professional difference between Human Translation and Machine Translation?
Its pretty similar to questions about artificial intelligence, a human mind has real "intelligence" and is able to think outside of the box to find solutions, where as a computer can only "think" how it is programmed. For example humans can easily tell a difference between a cat and a dog, however programming a computer to look at pictures of each and tell the difference is incredibly difficult.
In your example there are situations where machine translation is fine, for example if you are just wanting the gist of an article but its written in a foreign language, you plug it into google translate and get a result that whilst not perfect is reasonable and readable. However in area's such as law where the words and meanings need to be kept exactly consistent machine translation is useless, you need to have a speaker of that language who can understand the meaning of the entire text rather then just translate words.
