Septem means seven in Latin. September was the seventh month in the old Roman calendar.

Then why is it now the ninth month?

Because since then, two months were added to the calendar.

Two months were added at the beginning of the calendar (January and February), hence why September is no longer the 7th month. Same for Oct (8th), Nov (9th) and Dec (10th).
Also, July and August were renamed in honour of emperors Julius and Augustus.
