How important is it to conform to the rules?
Conformity may work for the good of community and society but not necessarily for the individual. Example: the HP EC contorversy. What say you about the pros and cons of conformity?
I feel like to have a peaceful and successful society, you need to have at least some level of conformity. That being said you still need everybody to be individual as well. If everybody is the same and does things the same way it is hard for society to progress. The fact that people have different unique ways of thinking and doing things is the reason why we are able to find new ideas and progress in new ways!
Conformity sounds good in theory Jan and can make a community run smoother, however in reality it is unattainable because some people will always rebel and do things their way or protest about the restrictions imposed. HP would probably run smoothly if everyone just accepted all changes without question but the nature of the site and the type of people here (thinking, questioning, artistic, intelligent) makes that a pipe dream. All organisations, Governments, communities etc need to be held to account and their motives questioned. HP is no exception.
A cool concept is to put "conformity" and juxtapose it with "community". We are all healthier when we act in community. We are all just a little less when we act in conformity. HP is on one hand a wonderful community of people. On the other hand it is a business trying to create conformity to maximize efficiency and profit.
I do not need to be efficient and profitable so I lack conformity with HP's desires. Most of my writing just does not lend itself to marketing products or services of any sort. So I would say I do not conform to their best business practices. But they still put up with me and that detracts from conformity and adds to community -- good for them.

We are seeing some standardization of HP. It looks to being doing quite well. Even wild crazy eyed rebels like me can standardize our publications to do better. But that is nearly exactly like our pre-school children. They need to be set up to go to school. It seems to me that both HP and...

For all the talk of independence, freedom and liberty the truth is that conservatism is a belief socially centered in conformity, overwhelmingly one faith, overwhelmingly one race, terrified of difference and more than willing to use the law to oppress those who might show a different sexual...
