It's hard to defend generalizations. Both groups have their extremists.

There is actually a problem with this for the top 1%. Charles Murray discusses this as the upper class where they eat the same foods (argula, vegan stuff, never an American beer), go to the same private schools and elite colleges, shop at the same venues, enjoy the same culture - and it is very different from the common masses. Think of the people who have never stepped in a Walmart and think Trader Joe is slumming compared to Whole Foods, where attending a state school is anathema unless it is MIT but otherwise must be an Ivy League or Stanford, where all the kids go to private schools for 10K a year minimum, unpaid internships during and after college are financially painless, and an example from Charles Murray, they and their parents never worked a job in their lives where their muscles hurt except for getting carpal tunnel syndrome.
And unlike the upper class 50 years ago, they live in segregated by income neighborhoods, never mixing with the working class and barely with the middle class.
