American Idol appeared on television the first time back in 2002 and ran all of the way til 2016. Like most shows over the years their ratings began to fade with stiffer competition showing up. American Idol season four winner was none other than Carrie Underwood who is arguably the greatest Idol champion of all time as she dominates in all ares. Coming off a massive season with winner Carrie Underwood American Idols season five champion Taylor Hicks came along to underwhelming support. Taylor Hicks has released three studio albums that failed to perform well

Jordin Sparks was the youngest winner of American Idol claiming her championship during season six. Jordin Sparks has had a good career since winning Idol putting out three albums all of which have sold in the millions.

David Cook was the winner of American Idol Season seven beating out David Archuleta. Since appearing on American Idol David Cook has put out four studio albums which have sold well

In what may have been the most surprising American Idol victory Kris Allen took out Adam Lambert to win season eight of the reality show. Kris Allen since leaving the American Idol has put out five studio albums which have done reasonably well

American Idol season nine was won by rocker Lee DeWyze who beat out Crystal Bowersox to take home the title. Since appearing on American Idol Lee DeWyze has put out five studio albums none of which has sold particularly well.

American Idol season ten was won by country music star Scotty McCreery who was clearly the favorite from early on in the show. Since appearing on season ten of American Idol Scotty McCreery has done very well releasing three studio albums all of which have done well

Phillip Phillips was the season 11 winner of American Idol and his coronation song Home is the top selling finale song by any American Idol. Since winning season 11 Phillip Phillips has released two studio albums both have sold quite well

American Idol season 12 winner was Candice Glover. Candice who auditioned for American Idol season 11 has released one studio album, Music Speaks, which failed to produce a high number of sales

Season thirteen of American Idol was another tight race to the end between winner Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene. Since appearing on American Idol Caleb Johnson has released the studio album Testify which suffered from poor sales

American Idol Season 14 winner was Nick Fradiani. Since winning American Idol Nick Fradiani has released one studio album, Hurricane, to very poor sales. Unfortunately this trend of poor sales from American Idol champions is one of the reasons the reality program is on its last legs.

For its final season American Idol crowned Trent Harmon as their champion. As this was the last season of the reality program there was a ton of performances by past American Idol champions including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Since the finale Trent Harmon has released one studio album, Trent Harmon EP, which has not been out long enough to determine how well it will sell.
