Reasons to Play the Piano

Updated on March 11, 2013

So Many Possibilities

I play the piano, and trust me, is a wonderful skill to have. It’s like knowing another language. It is hard to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced the true joy of the melody created. It is something that mesmerizes both the composer and audience.

When a pianist really begins to understand the true emotion that can be evoked while playing, they will start to see the multiple possibilities now available to them. It literally feels like a whole new world is discovered when this happens. When this happens, it becomes easy to “get lost” in the music for hours on end.

First of all though, check out that piano to the right! It's so sick looking! I don't even know what I would do with one that looked that intense!

Anyway, the flow of the notes and the immense variety that can occur by playing only a few keys can be simply astonishing. The moods can be from slow and eerie to quick and cheery. It is a great way to get out emotions if no one is there to talk to. It takes a little bit of practice, but learning how to play the piano is a skill worth working for. Most importantly, it’s fun! Aside from just “messing around” on the piano, the fact that almost every song can be played on it is a reason for learning.

Nothing’s cooler than playing a popular song in front of friends and having them light up with excitement because you’re playing one of their favorite songs. Even though you may not have a plethora of songs to play by memory, it’s fun for everybody there.

Another fun thing to do on the piano is to have your friends act out charades while the pianist plays to their reactions. For example, if the actor is walking around slowly, then the pianist might play some low notes slowly. But if the person starts jumping around the player might switch to some higher notes and even throw in some trills (playing two notes right next to each other really fast). It sounds technical on paper, but trust me, it’s actually really fun.

It's not hard to learn, its just takes a lot of consistent effort. You really don't even need a teacher. All you need is some way to decipher between the notes. You're not going to learn everything the first time, but hang in there. Because once you see the possibilities, you're only regret would have been not to start sooner. So go try it out.

Btw, check out Youtube. Type in your favorite piano song and type synthesia afterwards. It'll pop up with, basically, free music for almost any song you can think of!
