DC Comics Upcoming Movies & Marvel Comic Movies Coming Soon

Updated on March 22, 2014

2011 had some great and not-so-great comic book movies from Marvel and DC Comics with the likes of Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern. So what do comic book fans of the have in store for them this year and in the future?

Believe it, DC Comics upcoming movies and the Marvel Comic movies coming soon in 2012 are highly anticipated releases. It's gonna be better than last year.

So let's start off with the confirmed releases that DC Comics and Marvel Comics have planned for us fans.

DC Comics Upcoming Movies 2012

2012's DC Comics upcoming movies really only has one in the spotlight, but it's a major one that has high expectations.

July 20, 2012 is the official release date for the last installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman series starring Christian Bale as the Dark Knight. This movie is highly anticipated and has a lot of expectations. How will this rebooted series end, and will it stack up to the previous movies, especially The Dark Knight? No one can deny The Dark Knight was a major success and is the 10th highest grossing film of all time.

Even more of a concern is the addition of Catwoman. DC Comics have yet to get Catwoman right on the silver screen. Though her character is beloved in the comics, I must admit adding her to the mix is a risk, considering the character's past disappointments on the silver screen.

Despite the nervousness of fans, Christopher Nolan hasn't disappointed us yet. I think this movie will deliver, and get ready for the cosplay fans dressing up during opening weekend.

It seems DC Comics upcoming movies for 2013 only has one that's been confirmed, and that's the rebooted Superman: Man of Steel movie. It's scheduled release date is set for summer June 14, 2013, and has new actor Henry Cavill filling the big boots of Supes.

DC & Warner seem to be jumping on the "darker and grittier" motif that Christopher Nolan has done with the Batman reboots, and we'll see a darker more edgier Superman in theaters in 2013. I remember talking to Greg Rucka at one Wondercon, saying Superman was too one dimensional and needed to get bit edgier for the movies. His reply, "That's just not the character (Superman)."

Well, that may be true. It may not be how the "character" is, but it seems Hollywood and DC Comics agrees that Supes needs to go that way as well. Will all DC Comics movies have a dark tone like Nolan's Batman trilogy? I sure hope not.

With Green Lantern churning out a so-so reception at the box office and major rants of disappointment from fans, will this "darker and grittier" Superman reboot deliver? After all, Green Lantern was not a dark and gritty movie, and it was pretty much a failure.

It seems that DC has trouble translating their characters to the silver screen, unlike Marvel who are putting out quality, entertaining films every year. So far it seems the only successful movie character DC & Warner have now is Batman.

However, Superman: The Man of Steel will have General Zod once again commanding all the evil, badness, and it will be great to see Superman go up against a villain who can actually take it and dish out it just as good, or, as comic fans are hoping, a lot more.

We will just have to wait and see, wont we?

There are upcoming DC Comic movies that have the green light, but no confirmed movie release dates. They may come out in 2013, but I would push them back to at least 2014.

It seems DC & Warner have not given up on the Green Lantern movie franchise, and the first one was just a stepping stone to build up the cosmic emerald "Space Cop." I think the sequel will be a lot better than the first.

The sequel will have the anticipated duel between Green Lantern and his arch nemesis Sinestro! That's a battle comic fans are dying to see on the silver screen, and I think it'll be worth seeing. However, whether this comes out in 2013 or 2014 is still up in the air. I'm leaning more towards 2014, but the rumor is 2013.

It seems the scarlet speedster finally has a script according to those at DC Comics & Warner Bros., and rumors of this speeding towards production has been around since 2010. Yikes! It seems DC & Warner have had trouble getting their beloved Superheroes to the silver screen.

Considering they haven't even confirmed a director yet or even the cast, the Flash movie may forever be a rumor. DC needs to get on the ball. A lot of fans are anticipating a Flash movie. Fans want it, but they don't want a Flash movie like 2011's Green Lantern.

Marvel Comic Movies Coming Soon 2012

As usual, Marvel has quite a few movies ready to hit the big screen in 2012, and two of them are highly anticipated. Unlike DC, Marvel will hit two major blockbusters this year to DC's one. However, Marvel does start off this year pretty weak when it comes to comic book movies.

Coming to a theater near you Feb 17, 2012...this movie is the year' can I put this..."Don't really care to see it," when it comes to the anticipation level for most comic fans.

I will be Netflixing this one when it comes out on DVD.

It's going to be a box office rivalry between this highly anticipated movie and The Dark Knight Rises. So when is The Avengers movie coming out? It's coming out on May 4rth of this year and is the first cross-over comic book related flick and will no doubt make history.

This is the most anticipated Marvel movie coming soon and has been so since the first Iron Man movie and Incredible Hulk movie came out with their cross over ending scenes. It appears The Avengers movie villain will be Loki. At least, he will be the main Avengers movie villain.

This movie is expected to break box office records, and sets new ground in the world of comic book movies. Will this movie spark more cross over comic flicks for future Marvel movies? Perhaps, and I think that will be exciting to see. Will DC get on the ball and finally do a Justice League of America movie? Who knows? We can only hope so.

Curiosity alone on this reboot will make this Marvel's second blockbuster of 2012. Coming out the 4rth of July weekend, comic fans are anticipating a more emo and darker Spider-Man reboot that seems to be basing it's plot lines and characters more from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series.

With new actor Andrew Garfield filling in Spidey's boots, there's a lot of mixed feelings about this reboot within the comic book fandom. I think this reboot will deliver, and The Lizard finally gets his spotlight and due as a Spidey movie villain, played by Rhys Ifans, the dude from The Replacements and Nottinghill.

Like the Avengers, I can't wait to see this movie, and I think Andrew Garfield will do an amazing job and surprise a lot of people and comic book fans.

It's going to be another big year for Marvel in 2013, and two Marvel flicks have been confirmed for a 2013 release date. Let's look at what's in store for Marvel movies 2013, as well as rumors beyond that year.

Riding off high from The Avengers movie, Iron Man 3 has been confirmed to hit the screen in 2013. So far the Iron Man movie franchise has delivered, but the third will not be directed by Jon Favreau. Gulp!

Although, I'm looking forward to Iron Man 3, I think Favreau did an amazing job, and I'm not down with messing up the chemistry of things. But who really knows the real reason Favreau bowed out, and does the real reason really matter? Naw, not really. What matters is if Iron Man 3 delivers.

I must admit, Iron Man 2, though entertaining, was a disappointment compared to the first Iron Man movie. I hope future Marvel movies like Iron Man 3 do not have lame, second-tier villains like Whiplash. I'm expecting the iron Man 3 villains to be more central to Iron Man in the story.

Iron Man should've went with the greats like the Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man.

Iron Man flies again on May 3rd 2013.

UPDATE: Iron Man 3 villains revealed! Click the link to find out just who are the Iron Man 3 villains in next years anticipated movie. I'm quite worried about all but one villain in Iron Man 3.

Marvel movies 2013 will see the sequel to The Thunder God. The Thor sequel will get a new director, and the first movie was not bad by all means. I actually scratched my head about a Thor movie, but I think they did a great job with the character.

We shall see July 26, 2013, which is the release date Marvel and Disney have confirmed so far. I truly hope they centralize the story more in Asgard this time. It's a great realm that we didn't get to see enough of in the first Thor. I hope they plan on doing this for future Marvel movies involving Thor.

Here are the movies that have not been confirmed but rumors have been floating around to their possible release dates in 2013.

This movie was supposed to be set for a 2012 release, but due to whatever circumstances, it got pushed to a possible 2013 release date. However, those at Disney and Marvel have not yet confirmed it.

Marvel and Disney want to broaden the Marvel Universe in movies, and a rumored Doctor Strange film has been in the mill, with Patrick Dempsey expressing a desire to play the role. However, who knows if this movie will come to fruition, as Doctor Strange isn't really a popular comic book character.

Marvel has also announced it's plans for these movies to go into production soon:

  1. The Antman
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy
  3. The Inhumans

Lol the Schumacher era with the Batman films was just horridly terrible. They are on my list of top worst comic book movies of all time, but some people liked them and voted them off my list. You're right, Burton wasn't anywhere near the campiness of Schumacher.

I do think that Marvel wants to go in the other direction of DC's and Nolan's darker, grittier motif when it comes to films. I don't think they can pull it off to be honest with you.

If you can't make The Punisher - the absolute easiest Marvel character to translate to screen and be dark and violent like the comics - where else can ya go? They attempted to with Punisher War Zone flick, which woulda been okay if they didn't have the Looney Bin Jim character and those lame jumping idiots who scale and climb walls. Jig Saw was also written poorly, but the actor did a great job I have to admit.

I also grew up on Frank Miller's Batman, as well as most of the 80s Batman comics, which is why I was kinda put off by the way The Joker was written in Burton's Batman film. Later I realized it was because he was adapting the character more from the early 60s Batman.

I have to be honest. I greatly enjoyed the first Iron's of my favorite comic book movies, but I don't care for the second one much. I'm hoping the third will be good, but I'm not digging Ben Kingsley's Mandarin look.

I tend to agree with you on all counts other than 2 things.

When talking about bright and shiny I was mainly thinking just about Marvel and their stuff and only Schumacher when it comes to Batman.... Sure, Burton was campy, but nothing compared to the Schumacher era..... and

I don't mind Marvel being bright and shiny, but do they have to be THAT bright and shiny? Marvel comics were too good to be reduced to bright colors, big booms and smart-ass quips from their heroes...... sure, is that unheard of in Marvel? No, but its not unheard of no matter what comicbook you look to, Marvel or DC, but Marvel just seems to go to an extreme with it at a time when DC has seemed to go in another direction with even their brightest and shiniest characters...... a direction that someone like you or myself seem to enjoy greatly (I grew up on the frank miller Batman so a bit darker is never out of the question)

I am not asking for the Avengers to be the Dark Knight Trilogy, but can I get a middle ground? Just saying

I love the Dark Knight Trilogy as well, and it reigns as the best comic book movie trilogy ever in my opinion. I just think that TDKR was the least favorite of mine of the series.

It's funny you mentioned the bright and shiny aspect, because there are two camps when it comes to the Batman fans. One likes the Burton movies better because they believe he stayed truer to the comics and Nolan deviated too much from them. The other side loves Nolan's take on Caped Crusader and state that Burton's vision was too campy, taking elements from the Batman comics when the Comics Code Authority made the comics industry way too regulated in terms of content.

This is the main reason why The Joker in the silver age was reduced from a homicidal maniac to more of a clown prankster (best example is the 60s Batman T.V. series), but when Denny O'Neil and Neil Adams got their run on the Batman series, they brought Batman back to his obsessive, dark roots and revitalized The Joker back to his murderous, maniacal roots.

Personally, I like both Burton and Nolan's visions for the character, but I still prefer Nolan's.

As for Marvel being shiny and bright, I don't mind it so much. It's a nice break away from the doom and gloom that Warner Bros. and DC Comic movies seem to have niched itself into (Watchmen is another example...superb movie however), and that's probably why Green Lantern was a huge flop. The tone wasn't dark enough.

All in all, I'm glad that technology has finally made comic book movies feasible, and I get a kick out of seeing my favorite characters on the big screen. I'm still crossing my fingers for a Wonder Woman movie and Justice League.

Thanks for joining the convo. Always appreciated and welcomed to hear other fans opinions.

As you said, we all have our own opinions. In mine there was little not to love of the Dark Knight Trilogy and it was a sure money maker..... Then again I've always loved bats and supes and never been much for the combo of "bright and shiny" with a few wise cracks sprinkled in.... A combo Marvel seems to love

I happened to enjoyed the Avengers and didn't care too much for TDKR. We all have our opinions. As for Man of Steel, we'll have to see if that brings in the ka-ching for Warner Bros., but personally, I'm not a big Supes fan, but like you, I will pay to see it. Thanks for chiming in. Always appreciated.

2012 has come and gone.... I am still recovering from Dark Knight let alone Dark Knight Rises. I look forward to Man of Steel with every day that passes.... and with the year almost half over, I remain fairly sure with the remainder of 2013, just as they did in the year prior Marvel will do little more than hurt my feelings with their movies, making me wish I simply kept that 8.50 and skipped watching their drivel.... until I can watch it on someone else's time and dime that is

I'm a fan with standards, I'm not crazy.... I'll go see their movies.... but after Avengers and Capt. America, I just wont do so while wasting my own money.

Swamp Thing was a T.V. series I believe for awhile. It would be a pretty interesting movie. DC right now is concentrating on Justice League movie and trying to get their other A-list characters on screen, which they are having problems.

I hope they make a Kite-Man movie I always felt he had potential to be a major Bad* in comics, I even tied some kites to my back as a kid and jumped off my roof, broke both mt legs and made it into the papers but for a moment I felt strong and powerful, Then faceplant.

I would like to see a Dr. Strange movie, there was an early 70's tv movie on Dr. Strange, but with our current technology - it would be great. Also - I would definitely see the new Thor 2, or The Wolverine movies.

Heya Cogerson...thanks for stopping by and commenting. Always appreciated. The new Spidey flick was really good. I enjoyed it and am glad that the sequel is already greenlit...the only question is who the villain will be?

As for Green Lantern 2. DC is still not sure whether to reboot or carry on with a sequel. Yes, they did lose money with the Green Lantern, but the film has already been established. To retry again would mean having to go through the whole origin again and rebuild. Who knows what they'll do with that. I'm leaning towards reboot.

I'm looking forward to both Iron Man 3 and the Man of Steel. I'm really hoping Man of Steel is good. I don't want to see the same ol' same ol' we've already seen with the Original Superman films.

As for the new Wolverine movie...I have hope it will be good. Silver Samurai is a villain and he's an interesting villain...the story line also is based off the Limited Series by Claremont and Frank Miller, which is a really beloved storyline, so it might have some potential.

Thanks for stopping by and the votes up!

Interesting look at the DC/Marvel Movies....looking at many of the movies you mention ....we now know the way those movies will be accepted by the The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are the #1 and #2 movies of the year.....and #3 and #7 of all-time.

Poor Spidey....I really think they rebooted way too soon...but I read that Spidey 2 or 5 depending on how you look at being green lighted.

Speaking of greenlighted....I am stunned that Green Lantern 2 is still a possibility....did DC not lose enough money on the first one? I think next year Iron Man 3 is going to destroy Superman at the box office.....but I am looking more forward to Man of Steel than I am to the new Wolverine movie....I thought the last time Jackman played the role he looked bored......voted up and interesting.

I thought a Deadpool movie was in the works with Ryan Reynolds to star. Perhaps, his poor box office earnings from Green Lantern has made Warner/DC think twice about his caliber to carry a big budget action flick. I dunno. Last I heard, Nolan and Warner were discussing what to do with the Green Lantern franchise. I think a Deadpool movie would be awesome with a different actor to play the role, though.

I agree that they should make movies about other characters..

I would LOVE a movie about deadpool.. or Doctor Doom...

Hell, even Hawkeye would be epic.

Arbie, that's what we're all wondering...whether DC/Warner has the creative and innovative mindset to make a Justice League movie happen. I really think they can put out a Justice League movie whenever they want, but I also think that there's a highly good chance it will be just garbage.

DC is really slow to get things moving for their other A-list comic characters. I think it's because they concentrate way too much on Batman and Superman, when there are others in their roster that could be mined.

It's just a fact that DC/Warner Bros have a very narrow mind when it comes to movies for their other comic characters. They lack vision like those at Marvel Studios/Disney do, and they lack the right creative players to make it happen.

I am disappointed in DC. There are at least three really incredible characters that could translate easily to the silver screen; Hawkman, Captain Marvel (Shazam!), and Green Arrow. Yet, they seem to think everything has to be "Batman-ish." Aren't Thor and Captain America box office proof that audiences don't JUST want "darker, grittier?" Messing with Superman's "boy scout" persona is NOT going to gain brownie points. Come on, DC. Get a clue.

Eddie and aj, thanks for joining in on the convo. Johnny Depp as Dr. Strange would be interesting...he's an eccentric actor so he may just fit the bill.

AJ, the Justice League movie would be awesome, but it would have to be all different actors playing Supes and Bats, since Bale expressed no desire to be in that movie...still it would be a sight to see.

Not a very big Superman fan so I'm really only looking forward to the newest Batman coming out when it comes to the DC collection. As far as the Marvel movies, I've been really disappointed over the 2011 group and am only partially looking forward to the Amazing Spider Man. Avengers will be good if they release an amazing trailer. If the trailer is subpar, I won't be interested.
