Fun Activities You Can Do While Sick in Bed

Happy sick day!

Illness sometimes strikes when you least expect it. You are feeling great one day and the next day, it hits you hard. Sometimes you can sense you are about to get sick, but you don't do anything about it. This is especially the case if you've been feeling under the weather, but you are too busy to take some time out to rest.

One day, you can no longer ignore the fact that you can barely stand up because you are so ill. This is one of those moments in life when you are defeated and you must accept it. It is time to get in the bed and ignore everything else.

Just because you are stuck at home doesn't mean you can't enjoy this time. There are plenty of fun activities that will distract you from the fact that your throat is on fire or your stomach just took a turn for the worst. Join me as I discover all the fun things you can do while sick in bed.

DayQuil makes everything funny.

If you are looking for something to make you feel better and help distract you from the misery of being sick, take some DayQuil. Not only will it make you feel better, it makes every comedy funnier than ever before. For that matter, it tends to make movies that are not funny pretty hilarious, too.

Some of my favorite movies to watch while on DayQuil include Napoleon Dynamite, Grandma's Boy, and anything related to Mystery Science Theater 3000. Those movies were funny before taking the DayQuil, but cold medicine tends to make them even better.

You can play "What's this in my nose?"

Oh yes, this is a lovely game to play when you have a head cold. You never know the fun colors your runny nose may produce when you blow your nose. Will it be green, brown, or even clear? Who knows? It is like a science project, only more disturbing because certain colors might mean you have bigger problems than you originally thought.

Grossed out yet? Sorry. Hey, at least I didn't mention my idea for a similar game you can play when you have a stomach virus. Ewww!

Discover new music!

While laying in bed sick, I decided to go on Amazon's song list and see what everyone else is downloading. Not only did I confirm what I had long suspected - everyone on the planet loves Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me, Maybe, I also discovered some new favorite songs. If you haven't heard Clairy Browne & the Bangin' Rackettes' song Love Letter yet, you are totally missing out.

Laying around feeling sorry for yourself is the perfect time to listen to music you haven't heard for a while or you would have never discovered otherwise. So download some music and rock out while sneezing to the beat.

Prank call everyone you know.

When did you last have the chance to prank call anyone? It has been a while, hasn't it? I'll bet you've been so busy working all the time that you don't even have time to prank call friends and family members. Well, now that your voice sounds terrible due to whatever horrific illness you have, it is a great time to prank call everyone you know.

Take some time to come up with funny one-liners or a weird story to share with folks on the phone. If you are still on your DayQuil buzz, this should not be a challenge. Hey, days later when you are feeling better, everyone can tell you what kind of interesting topics you shared with them on the phone. Chances are, you won't remember any of this, so it will be helpful for your buddies to remind you.

Imagine what everyone is doing at work.

A fun game to play while sick in bed is imagining all the misery you are missing at work. Of course, sometimes this isn't too fun if you know your job will be horribly overwhelming when you return, so if that is the case, don't bother with this activity. However, if it brings you a lot of joy to know you won't be missing that terrible weekly meeting or you won't have to fight to use the microwave at noon, go ahead and let your imagination take you to work.

No one likes to be extremely sick, but everyone likes missing work. So just look on the bright side of all of this. Maybe your head feels like it is going to explode, but hey, at least you don't have to worry about answering all those work calls today.

Think about everyone you would like to contaminate.

While you are laying around in misery, imagine how fun it would be if you could contaminate the people that really get on your nerves. I mean, I am not encouraging you to invite over your enemies and cough on them. I am just saying it could be amusing to imagine some of the most annoying people in your life catching the flu, too. Seriously, if you have to suffer, why shouldn't your aunt that always nags you about your weight have to suffer as well?

Bug the crap out of people online.

Now that you have all this free time, don't just sit around and have a pity party. You should instead bug people online. I sure hope you have a laptop or a tablet. If you only have a desktop, I don't recommend dragging that to the bed so you can type on it. You'll just have to think about what you can do once you do have access to the computer again. If you do have a tablet, laptop, or any product that begins with an "i" in it's name, it is time to be an online nuisance.

You can go on Facebook and post annoying comments on everyone's page or put sad status updates on your profile. You can also create accounts on dating sites. If you are single, it can be hilarious, but also productive. I would recommend using a photo from a healthier day though... don't download any right now! Also, if you have instant messenger, you can communicate with all your unemployed friends. After all, they are so lonely when you are actually at work.

Of course, I believe one of the best ways to bug everyone online is to create a completely lame hub about being sick. If possible, share your story on Web Answers and in blogs, too. That is totally the best way to spend your time if you are not sleeping. Thank goodness I ordered this laptop a few weeks ago. I'd hate to actually rest while at home and sick.

I think I was pretty delusional on cold medicine at the time when I wrote this. Sometimes I think that is when I do my best work. :-) Thanks for your comment!

I hate colds when they drag on like that. I would rather just be down and out for a few days rather than have the illness drag on for weeks. Yuck! Hope you are better soon!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been sick since last week. Not sick enough to stay in bed, but lousy enough not to go anywhere, either.

Sorry you are not feeling well. I can't party like I used to either. I am glad this hub helped you stay entertained and I am glad you don't have a cold. Thanks for the votes and comment!

hahaha Jeannie - I am sick...and in bed right now:) lol I partied a little too much for my anniversary:) lol I guess I am too old for gobs of champagne and o.j. Good thing I didn't mix - I noticed it was 3 am and told my husband I better have a Bloody Mary - it was breakfast time! I am so glad he told me what a dumb idea that would be:) lol

So yeah, I have been trying to do minimal housework and lots of b.s'ing:) lol

I don't have a cold so "what's in my nose" will have to wait for another day!

Up and everything - especially useful!

Stephanie Henkel, I know what you mean. I have no tact at all when I am sick. That is the main reason I have to stay home and not go to work when I am very sick. I have so much I'd like to say, and some things are better left unsaid! Thanks so much for the votes and for sharing my hub!

anupma - Thank you so much for the votes. I was sick and needed to do something to keep my mind off of it. :-)

I used to love going on line to bug the crap out of everybody when I was home sick! The only problem was that I would lose some of my natural charm and tactfulness when writing to people at work, but hey, I was sick and they were having all the fun at work! :)

Too bad I didn't have your article to inspire me in making crank calls. :) Love your sense of humor! Voted up, funny and shared.

Kai0224liu - Thanks so much! I came up with this since I've been sick most of this week. :-)

KBEvolve - That sounds pretty awful. I hope this at least helped cheer you up. Thanks for the comment!

rcrumple - Yes, I thought I was perhaps going to far with the nose game, but hey, sometimes you have to push the envelope. Hehe. Thanks for checking out my hub!

tjdavis - I am happy you enjoyed my hub. Thanks for putting a link on your site.

Phil Plasma - Yeah, dragging those desktops around used to be a pain. I am glad I can be sick with my laptop now. Of course, maybe it was better back in the days when it was OK to be sick and allow myself a break from being productive. Thanks for the votes!

Faith Reaper - Oh yes, Benedryl messes me up too. I can't even imagine taking a swig of that before going out the door. It knocks me pretty much out. I take it if I can't sleep and my allergies are bothering me. Thanks for the comment!

Ttoombs08 - Hahaha, you are too much. That is a great idea for a doctor though... even if somewhat unethical. ;-) Thanks for the vote up and thanks for sharing!

KDuBarry03 - Yes, the joys of being sick. Some of these activities are great even when well, but for some reason, funnier on cold medicine. Thanks for checking out my hub.

jennzie - DayQuil really makes me goofy. I don't know. It doesn't have as much of an effect on everyone though. Thanks for the vote up!

lambservant - OK, I will spare you all the details as far as my nosing blowing goes. :-) I seem to be a bit of a lightweight as far as cold medicine goes. Most people tell me DayQuil does not bother them that much. I will tell you, I am flying higher than a kite when I take it. Hehe. Thanks for the comment!

I got the mental image of dragging my desktop, monitor, speakers, printer (since it is all connected) onto my bed, whoa, what a workout, and especially challenging with a raging headache and fever induced hallucinations. Great hub with some fine suggestions, voted up, useful and funny.

As far as the FB, have at it but please don't describe what color, texture, or smell that came out of your nose, mouth, or behind. I have a friend who every time her kid gets sick we have to hear every detail.

I have never had any unusual effects with Dayquil, but Nyquil is 10% alcohol and it will give you a very nice warm glowy feeling and just enough buzz to make you forget you're sick.

  • jennzie profile image

My ex-father-in-law was a doctor. When I was sick, he would hand me a stack of his cards and send me to the mall to sneeze and cough on ppl then hand out his card. LOL :)

I like to mix my DayQuil with a little crown to stir things up a tad. :) Great hub, Jeannie! :) Voted up and shared. :)

  • Faith Reaper profile image

LOL, but if you take NyQuil, you will be in a comma and not know a thing that is going on. DayQuil must really make you hyper if you can do all of those things while sick! Never get in a hurry when you have bad allergies and right before you run out of the door on your way to work and just take a "swig" (is that a word?) of Benedryl (spell?) because by the time you get to work, your office will be spinning. I know, as I did that one time and must have taken a tad bit too much. LOL I mean I could not even function, that is how bad it was. Very funny hub. Good laughs tonight. In His Love, Faith Reaper

fpherj48 - Oh, I am quite sick, but hey, at least I got this hub out of the experience. I am feeling better now though. I don't know... DayQuil always gives me a cold medicine high. But then again, I am taking it with Mucinex and just about anything makes me wacky. Thanks for the vote up!

carol7777 - I did nothing but sleep and feel sorry for myself yesterday. I did manage to get online for maybe an hour, but I decided to be more productive today. After all, it is nice not being at work, but I hate not being productive at all. Thanks for the comment!

mary615 - You are so right. I keep getting distracted and focusing on drinking lots of water. But I do need to gargle more. Thanks for the advice!

jenbeach21 - I am happy you liked it. Thanks for checking out my hub!

hecate-horus - You know, I don't even question the magic of DayQuil, I just take it. :-) That song is really great, isn't it? I discovered it yesterday when I was trying to stay distracted. Thanks for the comment!
