How Oprah's Favorite Things Are Sending Mankind to Hell

Updated on December 31, 2017

Ok...the title may be a little strong, and no I don't think we are going to HELL. But I am trying to make a point. The fact is, is that Oprah's Favorite things episodes are sending the wrong message to viewers. For those who aren't familiar with the show, Oprah gets tons of expensive sponsors for the show and gives away products to her audience members. The show works in a formula fashion. Oprah gets them hyped up, audience screams and she gives expensive self-indulging crap such as Gold lame UGG boots or coach bags, then it continues with the next product.

This orgy of consumerism becomes desensitizing, after people have cried screamed and jumped on stage to hug her.

What does this teach us though? "Wow, they are lucky...look at all the stuff." Or, "I wish I had that stuff!!"

The list of things add up to about $15,000 worth. Oprah's audience is about 300. They get what's on the list...do the math.

My problem with the whole thing is that we are perpetuating the need for stuff and we are apathetic to real things that are important. Fellow man.We are all from the same place when it comes down to it and we should all take responsibility for taking care of our fellow man. Did you know that in Germany, people are required either to join the army OR do social service when they are 18. That would be wonderful if we had it here. We need to teach compassion.

If you were to die tomorrow, and were asked what you did for others, how many things would be on the list? Also, it's not even monetary. It's SERVICE. Going to work with other people who need help (shelter, hospice, benefit, animal rescue) giving of yourself. Making it a better place. DOING SOMETHING. That is our purpose here. Not to become famous or to make a million dollars but actually make a difference in contributing to your fellow man. Fill your pockets with that idea. You will be richer!

That 4 million dollar episode could have been given to a food bank to feed people. Gold UGG boots? REALLY???

I'd like to see Oprah do this!
