Good Shows Like Downton Abbey
If you enjoyed Downton Abbey, here are some shows that might be of interest to you. However, before we go into that, there is some other stuff related to Downton Abbey you might not have watched or read. Here they are:
- Downton Abbey 2
- Book: The World of Downton Abbey
- Book: Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle
If you are a big fan of the show, you might want to check out the books as well. I would say it is a good read.
Aristocrats
This show is set in the 18th century of England. You follow the story of four sisters - Caroline, Emily, Louisa, and Sarah Lennox. Each of them comes from different political background and it portrays their life story.
How I Met Your Mother
In a show where nobody can keep a secret well at all, it has some similarities with Downton Abbey in a sense that a secret gets spilled easily and no one trusts anyone easily.
Game of Thrones
This show takes place in the medieval times where seven families fight to control the sacred land of Westeros. The main families ask an old friend to be their chief advisor and he suspects that someone within the family is plotting a revolt to take the throne. The Queen's family is planning to overtake the throne and so does the previous rulers. All in all, you have the different families vying to take the throne, making it a rather complicated but exciting show.
Paths of Glory
This is actually an anti-war film produced in 1957. This is based on World War I. The main star of the film Kirk Douglas is Colonel Dax and he is the commanding officer of some French soldiers who do not want to perform a suicidal attack. There is some tyranny and corruption going on in France during that time where men were unfairly executed for not wanting to fight in the war. It is quite a tragic show in my opinion.
Boardwalk Empire
This is quite a good show. You follow be Enoch Thompson, a political figure that rose in power and took control of Atlantic City. This was during the 1920s Prohibition period. Enoch talks to various important historical figures in his life. There are many politicians, government officials and commoners that look up to him as a powerful figure interacts with him. The government soon takes an interest in him due to his lavish lifestyle as a political figure.
Breaking Bad
This one breaks away from the traditional shows I introduced as it is more "modern". The story takes place in New Mexico, where a struggling high school chemistry teacher finds out that he has lung cancer. Devastated by the news, he turns his life around and seeks after crime related activities. He would sell methamphetamine and he plans to build a wealth nest for his family before he dies. This show has impacted me quite a bit after watching it. I related to him in a sense that we all seek financial freedom in some way, shape or form.
Pride & Prejudice
This mini series takes place in the early 19th century. The story revolves around Mr and Mrs Bennet's five daughters. A new eligible bachelor named Mr. Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy moved in town. Things start getting interesting as Bingley starts liking the eldest daughter of Mr. Bennet while Darcy is starting up a storm against the second eldest daughter, Elizabeth. If you are looking for plenty of drama, witty lines and romance, you pretty much have it in this show.
Parade's End
This show is mainly focused around a love triangle happening in the middle of World War I in Europe. Christopher Tietjens, the main man of the story. He is married to his wife Slyvia, but there is also Valentine Wannop, who he likes as well. Christopher eventually had to go fight in France due to the war and had to leave both the girls behind and a son which might not be his. He eventually has to make a decision on whether to stay with her wife beautiful Slyvia or go with cute Valentine.
Hey Christopher, I think you should bed both. Okay, I am joking. This show is pretty good. My dad even watches this.
