So You Think You Can Dance Episode Recap and My Take – Season 5, 2 of 6 Voted Off

Updated on October 22, 2011

Last night’s performance show

Opening Number

It was a really great opening number to “Send in the Clowns.” Loved Tyce Diorio’s choreography, loved the costuming, loved the performance.

Girl Finalist #1 Announced – The first girl in the Top 4 is Jeanine. Kayla and Melissa are not necessarily the bottom 2 but they do have to dance solos later.

Throughout tonight’s show we were treated to encore performances of the 4 pieces from last season that were nominated for Emmy Awards.

Encore Performance 1 – Adam & Eve

Jessica King & William Wingfield were back to perform Tyce Diorio’s nominated contemporary piece. Jessica is still not up to Will’s level, though she is not bad by any means, I will say that she seemed very disconnected. Will was beautiful to watch as always.

Guy Finalist #1 Announced – The first guy in the Top 4 is Brandon. No surprise there as not only is he an amazing dancer he is also gorgeous and seems to be a fan favorite.

Encore Performance 2 - Mercy

Katee Shean & Twitch Boss were back to perform the Mia Michael’s choreographed and Emmy nominated piece—affectionately known as “The Door.” Although this piece does not have a lot of major dance moves and is more acting I loved it the first time and it was even better than the first time.

Encore Performance 3 – A Los Amigos

Chelsie Hightower & Joshua Allen then performed Dmitry Chaplin’s Emmy nominated Argentine Tango. First I have to say that Joshua’s hair is all but gone and it looks great! It was still a very exciting piece, he was a tad rough around the edges, but I doubt he has spent much time dancing ballroom since their tour ended. Chelsie was fabulous in her specialty.

The Solos (no commentary from the judges again tonight)

Melissa – Same as last night…I am done with her. I should add that I am sure she is a very nice person, and she is by no means a bad dancer. I just feel like as the season progressed she got lazy in her solos, seemingly around the same time it became so obvious that her being en pointe was a big deal to a voting audience largely unfamiliar with ballet and often dance in general.

Ade – He was much more controlled than last night, though he wasted time running across the stage to prep for a back-flip.

Guest Performance – Tonight’s performers wereThe JabbaWockeeZ, who won the first season of America’s Best Dance Crew (Shane Sparks from SYTYCD is one of the judges). VERY cool Popping and Locking with some Breaking and Hip-Hop added in.

Kayla – She If the way the audience screamed

Evan – Even better than last night. I would not be surprised if he gets Broadway calls after the show is over.

Encore Performance 4 – Bleeding Love

Chelsie Hightower (again) & Mark Kanemura were the final encore performance of the night with the piece that got Tabitha & Napoleon their Emmy nomination. This is one of my favorite pieces from the show, and still is, they did a great job as expected.

Musical Performance – It was Sean Paul. That is all I can say, I used the time as an opportunity to make some food, I was starving!

Girl Finalist #2 Announced Kayla is the other girl to make the finals. Thank goodness! Melissa is by no means a bad dancer but Kayla and Jeanine deserve to be in the finale.

Guy Finalist #2 Announced Evan is the remaining finalist. I think Ade made it as far as he did by being a great dancer but not all the way because he has a more quiet and under the radar personality. I hope he continues to grow in dance.

This means the finalists are: Brandon, Evan, Jeanine and Kayla. Kayla should win, and with the way the crowd was screaming for her tonight (and the way, as a resident I have seen “Kayla Fever” has hit her hometown of Aurora and the greater Denver area) I think things may just end that way. I am thinking Brandon for 2nd, Jeanine for 3rd and Evan for 4th.
