The 40th Anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show- A Science Fiction Double Feature
On the 8th day, God created lips!
An annual tradition celebrates 40 years.
Rocky Horror has become a giant cult classic that still, after 40 years, draws big crowds to movie theaters every where. It was a crazy and quite stupid film, so how did it garner such popularity? Well, the fans show up in great numbers to join in on the act. There is a long list of props to use and throw (like toilet paper and toast) and a long list of things to yell out (like "slut" whenever Susan Sarandon appears). That, as strange as it may seem, has created a movement more than a fan base, for sure. What this event has become, is far more entertaining than the movie itself.
A great scene from a screwy classic.
The truth about the movie.
Though movie fans flock to the theaters and pay $10.00-$20.00 a piece to enjoy this every October, the movie was a total flop when it was first released. It had a low budget, was shot in less than 2 months, and was silly and bizarre, to say the least.
So, why do fans love it? The atmosphere that it brings to the theaters every year is the draw. It is like a movie or comic convention arrives at movie theaters around the U.S. The noise, the humor and the contagiousness of the rowdy merriment that the showings have created, won't fade any time soon.
As bad as this movie was, they did one thing right.
While the cast wasn't bad, I will give the production team for creating a fun sound track. That was contagious and impressive. I do credit the fanatic following in part to the fun and easy to sing, selection of hits.
The Time Warp is still very popular as is the hit that the one and only Meatloaf sang.
This year, head out in costume to your nearest participating theater, or kick back and enjoy the fun and zany cult classic and journey into weirdo land, known as the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
