An overview of the best Italo Disco music

Italo-disco is the world’s most unappreciated musical genre. Unlike America, Europe did not experience the “disco sucks” phenomenon and as a result, disco music continued to flourish and evolve in Europe long after North America had buried it into the ground.

Italo-Disco is essentially a happy music. It’s comfort food. It reminds you of summer sun and beach parties and love. It’s not quite as obscure as say, Bizarro, but it is, sadly one of the world’s most overlooked pieces of culture.

It’s silly and fun. It’s English songs by Italians (and later by all Europeans) who don’t speak English. Don’t even bother trying to understand the lyrics. It has a slow, easygoing beat you’ll recognize right away once you get used to it. It grew out of synthpop and American disco and is, arguably, the world’s first mainstream electronic music genre.

It flourished in the mid eighties before tapering off and evolving. As technology advanced and newer sounds became popular, Italo-disco split. Some artists going on to produce Eurodance hits and others sped up the beat and formulated another EXTREMELY good and under-rated genre of music called Super Eurobeat.

During the recent eighties-renaissance that saw neon and big hair come back into vogue, I was saddened to see Italo-disco left out. If you’re here, it means you’ve stumbled across a rumour of it. Maybe you liked it. Maybe you want to learn more. Read more to learn examples of the best Italo disco music

Thanks for the great list, there are a lot of songs I'll have to look for.

I just wanted to add "Hey Hey Guy" by Ken Laszlo as one of the best Italo Disco songs I've heard so far.
