Why is Everyone So Obsessed with the Kardashians?

Sabrina loves to write about love, life, and everything in between in a candid yet humorous approach.

I remember when reality television first became popular. It was the early 2000s and everyone was talking about the show Nick and Jessica: Newlyweds on MTV. That was the first reality T.V. show I had ever seen and I have to admit I was intrigued. Nick and Jessica were both talented singers and celebs way before they ever had a show. I remember listening to their songs on the radio and reading about them in the magazines. Now it was possible to see them as they navigated through everyday life and went through the same challenges that all new couples did. It was impossible to dislike Jessica Simpson, who was both adorable and beautiful and Nick Lachey, her other half, who was funny and obviously the responsible one in the relationship who took care of the day to day stuff. This was a couple we could root for and like and that's what reality television started out as. Today, reality television is very different because it seems like just about anyone can get a show without having any real talents. Are you pregnant and a teenager? Hey you can be on Teen Mom and become a celebrity for it. Sex Tape? No problem, there's always room on television for the Paris Hiltons and Kim Kardashians of the world.

Since 2007 when their show Keeping Up With The Kardashians premiered, the Kardashian family has ruled reality television. You have to admit, it is pretty incredible that they had such staying power because most reality shows don't last more than a couple of seasons and they are about to start their 11th which is amazing! Somehow having a reality show has turned the Kardashians into a household name that you can't ignore because where ever you are they seem to follow you. Turn on the television? There they are, whether on their main show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, or on the numerous other spinoffs where they each "Take" some part of the country for whatever reason. Then they are always on the celebrity news shows like Access Hollywood and Extra! At the grocery store? No problem, the Kardashians are on every tabloid cover because it is important for Americans to know what they are wearing and where they are going or the world will stop turning. I remember when actors and singers were on tabloid covers and everyone was interested in Britney Spears and K-Fed or the fued between Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie over Brad Pitt. I miss the simple days when we actually had gossip about real celebrities and these said celebrities were talented and had won awards for their work like Grammys and Oscars. I guess the qualifications of being a celebrity have been considerably lowered because the results speak for themselves.

So who are the Kardashians? Well, there's a lot of them but here goes: Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kris, Kendall, Kylie, Rob, and there was Bruce but he's Caitlyn now. There's also Kanye West, Kim's husband, and their daughter North West. Kris is the mom and she is also the manager so she has been become known as the momanger. I think she's behind this whole Kardashian empire because she's really business savvy and obviously knows how to make some millions on the "talents" of her children. Kim is the most famous one because she's the reason they got a reality show in the first place. Something about Kim having a sex tape and Ryan Seacrest wanting to make a reality show about a normal American family that goes through everything everyone else does...well with mansions and nicer cars. So a seed was planted and man has it blossomed into something major.

People either love or hate the Kardashians, there seems to be no in-between. Personally, I don't hate them but I don't love them either, I'm more mildly annoyed that I have to keep hearing about them and seeing their photos everywhere and I just don't want to anymore. I try not to be a judgmental person before giving someone or something a try so I knew I had to actually check out their show before I started saying I hated it or it was stupid or something along those lines. I decided that I would give their show a try and see what the big deal was all about so I went on Hulu and watched the first seven seasons. To my surprise I didn't hate it. I didn't really like any of the characters nor could I relate to any of them but I have to admit the show was addicting! It's like there was nothing really significant going on but I still wanted to know what happened next and I couldn't even understand why I was feeling this way. Was I becoming a fan of the Kardashians? No, not at all but I have to admit their show was really entertaining and addicting. Even if you weren't a fan of them, once you started watching the show you kind of got sucked in and kept moving forward through the episodes.

I was surprised that the way they portrayed themselves on their show and how they were portrayed in the media was completely different. If you judge them just by the tabloids you are really going to hate them but if you take the time to watch their show you might feel differently. I'm not saying you're going to become an instant fan, I'm just saying you're going to look at them in a different light once you have a little background information on them and maybe a little more truth then what the tabloids spill on their covers. After watching a few seasons of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, I have to say I had warmed a lot towards them and actually liked Kim the most. There's something about her that the cameras love and the viewers seem to enjoy as well. I found myself more interested in her then any of the other characters and it became obvious why Americans are so obsessed with her. She's got that almost star like quality where if she's in the room you're only going to be looking at her and no one else.

I don't consider myself a fan of Kim but I don't dislike her or anything. I don't agree with a lot of her life choices like having a sex tape and becoming famous for it and appearing naked in magazines (Paper Magazine 2014). But that's just it, they're her choices and not mine and I don't really have any right to judge her or hate her for the choices she made in her life. Yes, she's a famous person so that means her personal life is no longer her own and anyone on the internet can comment on it as they please. Personally, I am not going to take time out of my life and comment on her choices like many people do because it's just a waste of time and I don't like to spread hate about people. I guess I learned my lesson well when I was little, if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all, which is what I do.

Many people question why Kim Kardashian is even considered a celebrity or famous when she doesn't really have any talents. Well, I guess that's to be debated what's considered talents these days. Becoming famous for a sex tape and holding on to that fame for almost ten years is kind of amazing. To have that staying power for something that ridiculous and disturbing is not exactly something to be praised or admired but I guess she saw an opportunity and took it. Like Marilyn Monroe has said: "Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul." The area that Kim has real talent seems to be in the fashion world. She is known for her revealing and darling styles that few others can pull off. Kim is also called the "Selfie Queen" because she likes to take a lot of photos of herself and post them on her Instagram account. She also has a book titled "Selfish" and it is completely dedicated to just selfies of her. And let's not forget that overly voluptuous behind of hers that seems to have become her trademark. It doesn't really matter how Kim became famous, the only thing that matters is that she's not going anywhere anytime soon and everybody better get used to it or they're going to be annoyed for a very long time.

It's your own personal choice whether you like Kim or hate her but I don't think it really makes a big difference to her either way. If people like her, they talk about her, if they hate her, they still talk about her and in Hollywood there's no such thing as bad press as long as people are talking. As long as people are watching the show, whether it's because they're fans or to make fun of it, they're still watching and it's getting more views. This means that Kim is going to keep making those millions of dollars whether we love her, hate her, or love to hate her. She's also making millions for her game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the Kardashian beauty brand, the various other products she's selling or getting paid to promote so don't worry about her, she's not going to go broke because we don't like her or her show. So what are we to do as viewers in this strange new world where sex tapes make people famous reality stars and pay them for simply living their lives on camera? Well, we have two choices, we can either sit back and enjoy the show or we can simply change the channel.
