Wordspit, The Illest - Audition and Predictions For America's Got Talent 7
Wordspit, The Illest! is a New York City music group that does a genre they refer to as "backpack pop culture arena rap." It is kind of a smorgasbord of different styles that combines rapping, singing, violins, and a number of other instruments.
When they auditioned in New York City on the episode of Monday, May 21, 2012, the judges way overpraised them. I felt like I was watching manipulation. Then again, the entire AGT show is one big manipulation, so that is hardly a surprise.
It seems like the theme this year on America's Got Talent is that mixing styles is supposedly talent. More than one dance group has used this rationale to claim they are different. Now, this Wordspit, The Illest! group is doing the same thing. But when you actually break down the performance, it is clear that the style is a gimmick to try to impress different kinds of fans with the same performance.
The actual talent of Wordspit, The Illest! is above average in my opinion. So I would have given them a chance, as well. But my prediction is that they will be pushed farther than they should advance on America's Got Talent with as much overpraise as possible. This is like PopLyfe and Nuttin But Stringz all over again. In the end, I predict they will not win but have a decent shot at the top 10. Whether they can make the finale is going to depend on the competition. Of course, they could also be eliminated in the Las Vegas round by the judges. But considering the judges' comments, I predict they will be chosen for the Top 48.
