Writing on Hubpages for fun and profit.
Why do you like to write?
Writing is not my forte, although I have learnt how to get ideas across, I know I am never going to be a great writer. I am OK with that, as I have found that my articles are well received by seeing the feedback I get in comments, so I get read here .
When I speak I feel I can express myself OK, but when it comes to writing it is difficult for me to avoid my thoughts wandering off without having someone to bounce off as we have when we are talking to an audience even of one.
I understand why many people do not get started writing online. It was scary for me and also for the friends I have introduced to online writing.
When writing a letter off-line I often read it back to myself and hated it! I need to see the finished letter as I have written it as the words do not always convey what I meant to say.
Depending on the type of letter written, it may take a few drafts before it is correctly spelled and easily understood, expressing exactly what I wanted to say.
Finding your own style.
Writing online is so much different, and more frightening than posting a letter to an individual person even if it is the I.R.S you have written too.
Hit that publish button online and your words become available to be seen by planet earth, and it takes a fair bit of confidence to do that.
I did not have that confidence, although I have been on the net since it started, I had never written online, because there are so many good writers on blogs and in forums I did not want to compete with these professionals in their area of expertise.
So I consulted a professional writer with a successful track record writing online. Someone who has confirmed testable results for her writing skills. A self published successful publisher.
My daughter! She has an online business with 47,000 plus loyal subscribers to her writing blog.
She also has hundreds of genuine testimonials from her subscribers and from those who have purchased her book, so I asked my daughter how she has succeeded with her online blog and all she said was.
"Find your voice dad. Your writing voice"
It took me a while to realize that I have a "voice" to use online!
I would love to say that finding your own voice was or is easy, but for some people like me it is not, others just need someone to point the way. You may be one of the others. If you are, you may find it easier than you thought it would be by a country mile!
I did not have my daughters talents and needed to find a way to practice my "voice" without being ridiculed for my still somewhat dyslectic and stilted writing voice.
One of my old profiles.
My accidental beginnings on hubpages.
I can't even recall how I found hubpages, but I owned an automotive workshop machinery and equipment supply business at the time, and had needed to write some online articles about equipment servicing, and because it was so specialised I needed to write it myself.
I must have come across the site while looking for articles so I could avoid writing one myself. I was quite prepared to pay up to $100 for a decent article that could explain what I wanted my customers to know about hoist safety. It needed to be truthful and accurate. I never found one by the way, and even had to start a category for automotive equipment and machinery here after I joined.
I chose Hubpages to publish initially because it has a wonderful tool a new writer will find invaluable!.
Hubpages allows you to write about any subject you like, and before you publish it hubpages give your article a pre-published score.
Hubpages has many great tools but for me this unpublished score for each "hub" or article was exactly what I needed for real safety and protection against embarrassing myself when I began!
I have needed to re-write most of my early hubs before having any confidence in them being understood by a wider audience. The difference is, that with the pre-publishd hub score to guide me, a decent inbuilt word processor with spellcheck to assist, it was a breeze. I also love that I can come back to improve my hubs after they are published.
I could now fix all the typos, and play around with the article learning all the time and watching the score go up as I learn about text capsules, photos, links and other additions and changes you can make later if you like.
Even articles written a year ago can be updated whenever.
The hubpage community and management has to be seen to be appreciated. First class all the way.
Find your online voice, write about stuff, any stuff you like.
Use the unpublished preview to get your writing up to speed before anyone reads a word and have fun with your new voice! Join here!
