Jimmy Buffett. got me through several freezing years while growing up in Western Labrador! Now my style of folk is 'Drunk, Carribean rock and roll, Newfie style'!

That's a really good question. I found a guitar in my hands before my ears could really hear music around me. I listened to no radio and knew anything about music. I taught myself guitar with a chord chart and nothing more. For years, I fooled around with sounds until I found combinations that I liked, and just played them over and over.
Finally, by chance, I ended up playing an actual song, as my mom burst into my room and said "Are you playing "Night Moves" by Bob Seger?!" And I said "Huh? Who's Bob Seger?" I guess the verse of Night Moves was the first song I ever played as far as I know.
I still see pieces of that style in my playing now, so it must have had some impact, but I've diversified to many different styles over the years as my ears have grown up.

Billy Gibbons lead work had a profound influence.  Eddie Van Halen's rhythm playing did too.  Tony Iommi and Warren DeMartini had a big influence as well.
