What's that movie where a middle-aged man goes back home to painful memories of his father?
In flashbacks later on in the movie, we see that as a teen, his father was having an affair with his teenage girlfriend in some kind of "secret" place (a cabin?). I believe we end up seeing (through flashbacks) that someone was killed, though I can't remember who exactly. This may be a british or irish movie, independent most likely. My memory is fuzzy on the details. Though I remember the acting being quite good.
The Affliction? That one wasn't exactly indie, but fits otherwise... Great movie about alcoholism n' such.

Nick Nolte did not play in this film I referred to, and it was made after 1997 I believe.
Could it have been something initially written by Frank O'Connor?
