Why are there so many reality shows on t.v. these days?
Other than the news, I thought we originally started watching television to get away from reality?!?!
Don't worry the majority of these reality TV shows are not even close to reality. I like to watch competitive reality TV shows emphasizing people excelling at their craft, but the rest...meh.
So, to answer your question: there are so many reality TV shows because people like to feel that they're entering other people's lives, especially if those people's lives are train wrecks.
Because people like to watch other people like themselves be successful and win...it makes us think we can do it too.
With all the cable programming, major networks can't afford to pay actors 2miilion an episode anymore the views are divided between too many shows and reality TV is cheap compared to large cast of over paid actors.
I think it's because of a combination of several things. First of all we love to watch other people fail ('Wipe Out') and enter other peoples lives ('Wife Swap'). Further more we like to get the idea that we are better than others or that we have a change to win a lot of money ('Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?').
And of course, reality TV is a cheap way to make money for a lot of networks. They don't have to pay for a set, actors and they only need a small crew. And since we all love watching reality TV the networks will earn more money than they spent.

Why do people on reality shows seem stupid? Is it me or these people just go on and stand there with a derp look on there face. Why can't they seem to find intelligent people. Are there even intelligent people anywhere on tv.

Do you watch any reality TV shows at all? Why or why not? There are many reality TV shows and it is a sign of a different kind of culture wherein people watch other peoples lives in action. We don't really know however if what scenes are staged or it is the reality.

Do you watch more "reality" tv shows or actual shows?I'm just curious. I find myself more interested in so-called reality tv, especially elimination shows like HGTV Design Star and Project Runway, than regular tv shows.
