What makes a song a "classic"?

Some songs we still know all the words to even years after it was released.  What makes a song an instant classic?  Some catchy songs only last a year or so.

The spin doctors, and/or those pushy DJs who tell everyone how wonderful a song is.

A classic is a song that resonates over time and also is timely. For instance, 'What's Going On' was Marvin Gaye's personal response to the Vietnam War from what he observed in the news and his own brother's experience in combat. However, many people still remember that song and it resonates today because while not everything is the same, the same core issues: war, family strife, changing social mores are relevant to everyone's life.

A classic song stands the test of time and can be appreciated by future generations as much as by the generation that first heard it.
