Jeffrey Lewis, Tom Waits, Sages Francis, Boris Smile, Regina Spektor, and Leonard Cohen.
All of these artist's lyrics are poetic and very sincere. They seem to enjoy writing about the things considered "too sacred", and have meaning and purpose to their words; unlike so many other artists who dip directly into the platitudes.

I have many favorites, but the Lennon-McCartney partnership was like no other. They had some sort of chemistry that produced many classic tunes, albeit, that also caused quite a rift after awhile. I think that is what happens when there is real passion between two people, romantic or otherwise.

The favorites who come to mind are:
    Cole Porter for classic simplicity.
Karen (and John) Carpenter for moving, heartfelt themes.
Michael Jackson for his genius mass appeal to get anyone to sing along.
Paul McCartney for classics that keep on giving.
Holland, Dozier, and Holland for all the memorable Motown classics of the 60s.
Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson for creating numerous R&B/Pop hits for such a wide range of artists.

I like McCartney-Lennon, I like the fun in their early lyrics.
I like Fanny Crosby, A blind lady, that wrote a lot of my favorite hymns.
I like Neil Diamond, and the ways that he made living enjoyable.
I like Gershwin, Cole Porter, Cohen, for the way they made musicals.
I like Carol King, Bert Baccarat, Billy Joel, they all can write about almost any subject.
