Films as compared to writing, allows humans to better express themselves, since the message of the film is conveyed better as it is visual. It makes it easier for us to relate to, say a film's characters since you see them visually rather than a character in the book, whose personality and looks you can only imagine.

It depends on the type of film. Films have different purposes just like other types of art has different purposes. A piece of art might be to inform. Another piece of art might be to entertain. A third piece of art might be to simply gain money.
It all depends on the producers purpose.
