Did "intelligent" music go out of style?

Mainstream music today is mostly based on melodies and strong vocals/heavy production. It usually sounds pretty good, but is it generally lacking in the intellectual department? Lyrics etc..

They are still around. However, they receive less exposer than music about big booties. Artist like Wale and Kendrick Lamar are poets but their lyrics are often hidden behind great beats. Singers like sia sings about self destruction. Janelle monae (another poet) sings about uplifting and self respect amongst the black community. Poets are out there you just have to listen pass the beats and hear the words. Also, look pass the radio they will only play music gets alot of exposer already. The good stuff is hiding.

Agree with your conclusion, but poetry isn't really what I'm after. I'm personally a fan of underground hiphop, where artists like Lamar are usually put into the same category as Lil Wayne etc, I'm looking for the artists who are philosophers, really
