What is the process of making a short story into a screenplay?
Should a short story writer even ATTEMPT to try this? Would a person need to take a boatload of screenwriting classes? Would it be better to try to get the short story into the hands of an experienced screenwriter? I was almost there - a small independent director had me work with an independent film writer and an author for a short story I wrote. We were doing it over the phone and somehow everyone let go of the project. I wonder if I could tackle or even should TRY to tackle a screenplay myself since this was dropped. What steps would a writer take to get a short story made into a script?
If the story is yours you should have a go at a screenplay yourself but I'd recommend a bit of research first. Look into the art of the screenwriter - I'm sure there are sites online - and once you have an initial draft have someone you trust, with experience, go over it with you.
Perhaps you're the type who needs a class room environment? Join a writer's group? A bit of study online? How about a screenwriter's forum? There must be something like that out there!
I've dramatised stories before - fairy tales and so on - but only at an amateur dramatic level, for schools and colleges. It's a fascinating exercise. Again and again I found myself having to cut out loads of narrative- the visuals make up for the words - add extra dialogue to spice up scenes - introduce new elements. Quite a challenge.
I wish you well. If you get the first one under your belt you'll have the confidence (and template?) to do more.

Beginning today, I am taking a 26,000 word story I wrote nearly a year ago and expanding it to novel length, whatever that may be. I've tried to let this story go, but it keeps coming back, asking to be rewritten...

With the increasing number of remakes, adaptations, and re-imaginings; is the film industry deviating further away from original content? Themes in films are destined to be explored over and over again; but does that...
