The Best Summer Songs Playlist for the ipod Part One

Updated on June 19, 2012

Get in the spirit of summer with these ageless tunes of summer

Summer is just around the corner with hot weather, beaches, warm nights, and endless things to do out in the sun. It is also a time to create a playlist of summer tunes for the ipod to help get you in the spirit of things.

Here are some songs that will have you wanting to go sit outside in your yard, or lie on a beach somewhere. These songs are ageless and may spark a memory of summers gone these songs can be like a soundtrack to your life.

THE BEACH BOYS - You can’t think of summer without The Beach Boys coming to mind. They had plenty of songs that made you want to move to California and maybe buy a surfboard. Here are the best of their summer songs.

FUN, FUN, FUN this song is fun. It doesn’t mention summer in its lyrics, but you can imagine the girl in the song riding around in her Dad’s convertible making all the girls jealous and catching the guy’s eyes.

ALL SUMMER LONG summer has arrived and kids out of school are planning their days riding Hondas in the hills, horseback riding, and playing some miniature golf sounds like some great days ahead.

CALIFORNIA GIRLS I imagine this song was written while the Beach Boys were touring all over America and missing home. This song brings to mind California beaches and an endless summer. It will never be an outdated song.

JAN AND DEAN – riding the wave of The Beach Boys success there came a few surf music groups and Jan and Dean were right at the top. They have some great summer songs too and here are a few:

SURF CITY this song is about teenagers buying an old car and cruising the town for the summer. Free from the confines of the classroom they are loading up their surfboards and cruising the streets looking for some girls. This song takes you back to the days when you didn’t have to work and all you had was time on your hands.

SIDEWALK SURFING suppose you don’t live near the water what is a kid to do? How about Sidewalk Surfing? The singer invites the listener to come along and Sidewalk Surf. There are a few dangers, but you can feel the breeze in your hair as you coast down the sidewalks. Cute song.

POPSICLE this song may not be as popular as some of the songs mentioned above, but it deserves to be on the list. In this cute song a guy and his girl are spending their summer in the back yard. The highlight of their day is the Popsicle guy. They buy the Popsicles because it is a way to keep cool on a stick. Catchy song and it makes you want find a Popsicle man somewhere.

Now I will move to one song by a singer or group that defines summer. Here they are:

CALIFORNIA SUN this was a one hit song by the group THE RIVIERAS. You can’t help but get into the groove with that jumping organ sound and hearing all about that warm California sun.

CALIFORNIA GURLS here is a more recent song with the California twist by KATY PERRY. Girls running around in their jeeps and in their stilettos on the beach you get all kinds of visualizations of sun and fun. This song is yet another reason to hit the beach closest to you or to get to California itself.

SUMMER IN THE CITY this song by LOVIN SPOONFUL takes you inside city limits where you can feel the back of your neck getting dirty and gritty. No shade, no water, no problem, evening is coming and soon things will cool down. Either that or find an open fire hydrant to cool off in. Great feel to this song and the noises of the city will make you feel like you are in the heart of it.

BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN by COLBIE CAILLAT is really a song about love hitting you all at once, but the lyrics of brighter than the sun will make you think summer with its heat and having to find your sunglasses. The song’s tune is also light and breezy and makes you think of those summer days.

VACATION this song by THE GO GOS makes you want to pack your suitcase and head out for your favorite destination. It is a song about someone not really wanting to become involved in a relationship, but everything about this song makes you want to plan your next vacation. Upbeat song it is the Go Gos at their best.

IN THE SUMMERTIME this song by MUNGO JERRY has hit the airwaves every summer since its first release in 1970. When the weather is high you can chase right up and touch the sky. Anyone who just wants to drive around and enjoy the summer weather will love this song playing as your personal soundtrack.

GROOVIN this song by THE YOUNG RASCALS is a great song because it lets us feel the pleasure of not having anything to do just passing the time enjoying the day. Who wouldn’t like that?

HERE COMES THE SUN in this song by GEORGE HARRISON it was probably meant more for spring, but its verse seeing the sun and knowing it will be a great day applies for the summer too. Love the guitar parts of this song.

Pulling together the great songs of summer I realized there were more than I thought. This list is a great beginning. Create your playlist with these songs or look for those songs that you remember or that makes you think of summer. It will have you smiling and relaxed and ready to get out there and enjoy the summer ahead.

Dear cfjots -- I am like you. I enjoy music from the 60s more than I do the 70s. I was born in 1953, so I am an experienced man. Notice: I didn't say old.

I am so glad that we met on HP. I look forward to reading your works and I thank you for the Follow too.

You might be interested in knowing that I have two cousins who live in Woodruff, S.C. and when I noticed you live in S.C. too, my heart beat faster than a '57 Chevy.

I will be looking for you and you do the same.

Loved your hub! When you talk about music, I am all in.

Loved your lay-out and when you talked about the Beach Boys, you told the truth about them forming the Surf 'n Sun Sound. Believe me. You have nailed it.

      Wonderful work.

Let me know if I can be of help.
