Music Written About Horses
The Horse Music Review
It seems only appropriate that my first Horse Review article should focus on music written about horses. I am a member of the The Horse Review Club and a large portion of my life has been dedicated to music, so this music has special meaning to me.
I invite you to join me in a walk down a music memory lane.
I have only provided videos and clips for a few. No doubt, you will be able to think of some additional songs about horses.
Wildfire - Michael Martin Murphey
When I was a teenager, this was one of my favorite songs. I remember there was a lot of speculation about the meaning of this song back then. As it turns out, Murphey had a dream about this ghost horse and wrote the words and music the same day. It does, indeed, have a haunting melody.
I happen to love the keyboard intro on this video, but if you want to get right to the lyrics of this song, you will need to start at 1:52
Run For The Roses - Dan Fogelberg
Dan Fogelberg was clearly one of my favorite soloist when I was growing up. My all time Fogelberg favorite was "Leader of the Band," but many would choose "Run For The Roses" Sadly, this great legend died a few years ago, but there will always be a place in my life for his music.
I am amazed when talent still flows from the fingers and the vocals of the original artist over 25 years after the original release of his song. I just had to use this video in appreciation of a great talent!
Horse With No Name - America
Another singing sensation that took the world by storm during my teenage years, were 3 young men who formed a band and named it "America."
I think every teenage boy, and a lot of girls, knew the lyrics of this song by heart.
Stewball - Peter, Paul & Mary
I always loved Peter, Paul & Mary. They have several songs that I enjoy. Stewball is just one of my favorites. I used to sing this song to my children.
The Horses - Kenny Loggins
This singer, songwriter and guitarist has soothed our souls and spanned several decades with his soft rock and mellow voice.
Bring On The Dancing Horses - Echo & The Bunnymen
As I was getting older, the popular music style was changing, but we still loved our horses.
Echo & The Bunnymen and U2 are two examples of what was popular in the 80's"
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - U2
A Horse Named Bill - Jerry Garcia
So many things could be said about Jerry Garcia best remembered as a member of the "Grafeful Dead."
I believe this little song shows us the humorous side of Jerry Garcia, as well as how diversified and talented he really was. Who would have thought this crazy rock band founder would also steal the show with a banjo.
Hush-a-bye - Peter, Paul & Mary
I will end my meandering down memory lane with another wonderful song by this legendary trio. I also sang this lullaby to my own children. My daughter is still waiting for her promised horse.
Again, there was not a Youtube video of Peter, Paul & Mary preforming this song. I have provided a link to Yahoo Music where you will be able to listen to this wonderful ballet in it's entirety.
