15 Netflix Recommendations for a Rainy Day
When the weather is warm and sunny, all you want to do is get outside and enjoy it. When it is gloomy and rainy, however, there's nothing better than curling up on the sofa to binge watch your favorite movies and shows. Netflix and chill has become a part of our culture.
The hardest part is deciding what to watch. It's common to see friends and family ask for Netflix recommendations across social media. This was my inspiration for writing this little series. In this fourth installment, I offer a variety of interesting historical documentaries, action movies, and comedy specials that will have you laughing for hours. Grab your favorite snacks and let's dive in!
One Strange Rock
This is an interesting docu-series that explores life and all things Earth from the perspective of real astronauts. There are ten episodes total, each one centered around a specific idea. Will Smith hosts and provides plenty of laughs and inspiration. What I found most fascinating about this series is how the mindset of each astronaut changed after being in space. This is perfect to watch with the kids!
The Highwaymen
You might have seen trailers for this movie all over the internet. There is a lot of buzz surrounding it. I sat down to watch it and after a few minutes in, my husband shut down his computer game and joined me on the couch. This movie captures your attention from the beginning and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. It's based on the true story of two former Texas Rangers, Frank Hamil and Manny Gault, who put an end to Bonnie and Clyde's reign of terror. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson are brilliant in their roles. This movie is a must-watch, and you might be surprised at what you learn.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 2
She's back, witches! Part 2 of Chilling Adventures is darker and more enticing. Sabrina discovers her true identity and unlocks her powerful magic, all while helping her friends and saving Greendale. If you haven't seen this show yet, give it a chance. You'll be hooked after the first few minutes.
Camp X
If you love spy novels or movies, this is the perfect docu-series for you! It explores how the British helped the Americans develop their own spy school and how those spies were an integral part in winning WWII. The most interesting and shocking reveal is how Kim Philby, the infamous double agent, had a hand in all of it. These two episodes will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more.
The Bomb Squad
This is a short docu-series that follows the life of British soldiers, specifically the bomb squad, as they carry out their tour of Afghanistan. It's an inside look at how important and how dangerous their job is. They also explore the challenges their families face while they're gone.
Ken Jeong: You Complete Me, Ho
We know and love him from The Hangover, but did you know Ken Jeong is an actual doctor? In this comedy special, you learn a lot about Ken and he pays tribute to his wife, a breast cancer survivor, and discusses his fame and his family. Grab some snacks and get ready to laugh!
The War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick
If you love history, anything by Ken Burns is a must-see. This dives deep into the heart of America and how life was changed forever on the fateful date of December 7, 1941. You get an inside look at four families and explore events and ideas you never learned about in school. It's shocking, horrifying, and inspiring all at the same time. You get seven episodes, each about two hours long. Grab some snacks and settle in for the long haul.
The Royal House of Windsor
As an American, I'm fascinated with the history of British royalty. It's not something we learn much about in school. This series starts by exploring the origin of the Windsors, how King George V saved the British monarchy during the rise of a fascist Germany, and how he transformed their brand. It discusses the famous scandal of King Edward VIII, how his brother, Bertie and the beloved wife, Elizabeth, saved their family, and of course, the rise of Queen Elizabeth II. You learn about a different side of Prince Charles and explore details you never knew about Princess Diana. It's a very interesting!
Secrets of Henry VIII's Palace
Following along with my fascination of all things British royalty, this documentary explores the history and secrets of Hampton Court. You learn interesting facts about Henry VIII and how this grand palace has transformed over 500 years.
Triple Frontier
This is a thrilling movie about five former special ops soldiers who carry out a heist of a prominent drug lord. It's full of action, emotion, and has an amazing cast. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you feeling hopeful. It's the perfect movie for a rainy day.
Hasan Minaj: Homecoming King
Hasan Minaj is a breath of fresh air. In this special, he talks about growing up in California as the son of immigrants, his heartbreaking prom experience, and his rise to fame. You will be laughing, tearing up, cheering him on, and laughing some more.
Medal of Honor
This is an inside look at eight ordinary soldiers who went above and beyond during their service. Each episode dives in to the extraordinary stories of these men who are true heroes. It's a fascinating series that will change your perspective, inspire you, and restore your hope in humanity.
Hiroshima: The Real History
This is a documentary that everyone should watch. It gives an inside look at the devastation and impact nuclear warfare had on Japan. You get real-life accounts from the people who survived and how this forever changed their lives. In addition, you hear from the scientists who helped create the bombs as well as the flight crew who delivered it. This stirs a lot of emotions and feelings, and you get a new perspective and a greater appreciation for history after watching.
Nate Bargatze: The Tennessee Kid
If you like a laid back type of humor, this is the special for you. Nate Bargatze is a dad and husband who finds the humor in everyday life. His stories are funny and completely relatable. He keeps it clean without sacrificing laughs, so you don't have to worry about keeping the kids out of the room or wait until they go to bed to watch.
Kevin Hart: Irresponsible
I adore Kevin Hart as a comedian. He is so full of energy and every special he's done is a hit. In this one, he talks about everything in life, from his kids to making mistakes and redeeming himself. If you want to laugh, this is the show for you.
