Arrietty the Borrower
The Secret World of Arrietty, released as Arrietty the Borrower in Japan, is a new film from renowned Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki.
This movie is the story of the Clock family, especially 14 year old, Arrietty Clock. Arrietty and her family are tiny people living under the floorboards of the home of an old woman. They live by borrowing small items that the woman would never miss.
This movie was released in Japan in 2010. It won Best Animation Film in the Award of the Japanese Academy!

What is the Secret World of Arrietty about?
The Secret World of Arrietty was written by Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The movie is based on the children's classic book, The Borrowers.
In this book, young Arrietty lives with her family under the floorboards of a home. She and her family members are about four inches high. They creep out into the home at night to borrow things that they need for shelter and food.
The biggest rule Arrietty is given as she grows up is not to be seen by one of the humans. In spite of this, she is seen one day by a new occupant of the home, a young boy named Shawn.
Shawn sees Arrietty another time in his room. Since Shawn is ill, he is very lonely. He and Arrietty end up being friends and do their best to be careful of their secret. Unfortunately, the existence of the borrowers has not gone unnoticed by another occupant of the house.
What will happen to Arrietty and her family if they are discovered?

The Secret World of Arrietty is the story of young Arrietty Clock, the young daughter of a family of borrowers. The borrowers are tiny people that live under the floorboards of homes. They borrow everything they need from the beans (human beings) that live in the home. Whatever they need - sugar cubes, or cloth, or cookies is taken from what is laying around. Only a little bit is borrowed at a time. The first rule of borrowing is not to be seen by one of the beans. Arrietty happens to be seen by Shawn, a young boy that has just moved into the home, when she is out borrowing. Shawn is staying there resting up for a heart operation. Shawn and Arrietty become unlikely friends and together they meet a huge obstacle head on. This movie is great for all ages and has a positive message.

Arrietty isn't your ordinary fourteen-year-old girl - she's small enough to make her home under the floorboards of a typical house, "borrowing" what she and her family need from the giants in whose shadows they live. A young boy named Sho befriends Arrietty, but when adults discover the Borrowers, Arrittey and Sho must work together to save her family. Based on the classic novel by Mary Norton, Arrietty is a delight for all ages.

The Secret World of Arrietty Cosplay
There is a wonderful Arrietty costume on eBay. Check the eBay section below to view it.
You can make your own as well. There are a couple things you would need for an Arrietty costume. She wears two different dresses. One is an open neck with a slight v cutout and the other is a turtleneck. The first one is short sleeved and the turtleneck is long sleeved. Both are trapeze shaped. Arrietty wears a hair clip and carries a straight pin with a yellow ball on the end.

Arrietty Dress Pattern - Arrietty Costume
As I mentioned before, you could make your own dress. If you aren't up to making your own pattern, you could use a pattern like this and modify it. The general shape and length looks good Arrietty's dress is shapeless, no darts or pleats. You could use the short sleeve version and then modify the neck a bit so it has the cutout v in front.
Arrietty Boots
These are the type of boots that would work well for an Arrietty costume. These are little girl boots. Do NOT buy them unless you are a little girl, or shopping for a little girl. This is the easiest way for me to show them to you.

The Borrowers Book - Classic tale of the Borrowers by Mary Norton
The Secret World of Arrietty is based on The Borrowers books, classic children's tales. This beautiful boxed set has all the Borrowers books: The Borrowers, The Borrowers Afield, The Borrowers Afloat, The Borrowers Aloft, and The Borrowers Avenged. Give these to your child, or better yet, read them to him or her. The reading level of the books is age 9 and above, but younger children would certainly enjoy it. This might be the perfect first chapter book! Read these charming books yourself and discover why Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli made this into a wonderful film.

I loved the Borrowers when I was a kid, and read the books to my kids. Sounds like a fun movie.
