What to Give the New Mom

Being a new mom is an awesome experience. It is joyful, exhausting, wonderful and life changing all at once. Finding a great gift for a new mother can be taunting. There are so many new and fun items to buy with today's technology. Just walking into the infant or maternity department can be over whelming.

I was a baby nurse for many years and will try to give you some ideas for some very good gifts. You need to decide if you want to get something for mom, baby or both.

How close are you to the mom? How much do you want to spend? Is this a first time mom or does she have other children? These are all questions to ask yourself when purchasing a gift for her.

If you are a grandparent you may be more interested in buying a swing or breast pump.

Help Mom Sleep Better

A pregnant mom needs special care just as her new infant will. Sleeping can be very difficult especially in the third trimester as the baby's weight makes it more difficult for mom to get comfortable.

I carried twins to term and would have loved this the whole body pillow as a shower gift or a surprise from my mom or hubby.

Breast feeding Pillow

After having breastfed twins I realize how awesome a breastfeeding pillow to prop your arms or baby's head on can be. You can take this little pillow with you to grandma's or keep one at both homes. What a great assistant for feeding your newborn.

Breastfeeding Gifts

Many moms today want to have the experience of breastfeeding their newborn. It offer so many benefits especially in establishing the mother baby bond. They infant gains many antibodies from the mother in the early day through colostrum the first milk. The baby learns how to use her mouth correctly to obtain the milk. At each breast freeing hormones are triggered the cause mothe's uterus to contract and thus stop bleeding and slowly return to it's rebirth size. Second time moms can feel the let down of her milk more quickly than the first time mothers.

Anything to aid in the breastfeeding experience can be a wonderful gift. A mother might want to purchase a breast pump for her daughter so she can baby sit and her grandchild can continue with the milk mom has produced just for babel

Smaller gifts include bottles, Burp towels, special soothing creams for mom's breasts, drink cups mom can carry around the house to have a glass of water whenever she breastfeeds, nursing gowns, nursing bra's pads, etc.

Sophie, Teething Toy

The Sophie teether is a quality toy. It has been around since the 1960's. It is all natural, colorful and aids in the infants development. The teether is so light an infant can hold it and play with it. It is so easy for the infant to manipulate it and most infants love this teether.

It is very soothing to the babies gums and BPA free.

Baby Monitors

A baby monitor is just about a must for a busy parent. This monitor works on 27 different channels and does not have an irritating white noise. You can wear it outside and talk to your baby from the other room.

Some parents prefer to be able to see their infant also and there are awesome video monitors also. They can give a worried the peace of mind they need.

Soothing Baby

Your baby has been used to the rhythmic sound of your heartbeat and the pump ot blood through the placenta. She heard you talk and any outside noise loud enough for her to hear. You may have even noticed she slept better when you were walking or exercising. This is a way that babies are 'rocked to sleep'. Once you laid down to rest your baby probably became more active in utero. All this tells us that baby is comforted as a newborn by rhythmic sound, motion and swaddling as she was swaddled in the warmth of amniotic fluid for 9 months.

Swaddle Blankets

Swaddling or wrapping an infant tightly so they feel secure has become very helpful in teaching the infant to sleep through the night. Babies jerk and as their limbs flail they awaken and scare themselves. By swaddling they feel secure as if they were still in their mother womb. The blanket are cotton and light weight and can be used in the summer months also

Many mothers like to care one or two with them to cover themselves while breast feeding. These blankets are a great baby gift.

How to Swaddle and Comfort your Infant

Breast Pump

Although very expensive a breast pump is a necessity for the breast feeding mom. It helps to relieve severe engorgment and allows mom to store milk for times when she wants to or has to give her infant a bottle. This pump is one of the best on the market.

This is a dual pump to increase the milk flow achieved the mother wants to achieve . It actually learns from the mother's setting and is padded and comfortable. A busy mom needs to store her milk and move on so this is an invaluable tool to mom's arsenal. Any breast feeding mother would be thrilled to receive this gift!

Pack 'N Play

Finally the Pack n Play is a necessity for travel and play. It can be used in the den or mom'w room and fits in a neat ravel bag for trips. The size is a large 38x38 giving the baby plenty of room to move around. Mothers say it has a more substantial pad and has colorful sides for baby to look at . It also is listed as useful from birth to 3 years, longer than other Pack N Plays.

This is also perfect to put in your bedroom to give you a few minutes to shower and dress.

It is and invaluable gift to be sure.

This little toy is a number one best seller among parents at a great price . It encourages both visual and auditory sensory development in your little one. It is light enough for a baby to hole and buttons are easy to push. Parents love the quality of sound and the fact that it is both entertaining and soothing. The bright lights get your babies attention almost immediately. A great first musical toy.

Stuffy Nose A chronic problem for Infants

Infants often struggle with stuffy nose and the new guidelines are to not use any medication to help them with this congestion. Mom's can use a small dropper of sterile saline and use a mechanical means to suck it up for the little one. This is not a table friendly topic but you will get much better sleep if your newborn can sleep. Keeping congestion down also help prevent ear infections as the newborn and young child have very short eustachian tubes and flied builds up quickly. Try a nasal aspirator. Your child will hate you and then LOVE you!!!

Baby Swing

My first child had colic and the only thing that would soothe her was her infant swing. We only had the crank models then! Now swings are awesome. This on comes with soothing music, three positions, different speeds and a strap to keep your little one from falling out. How awesome.

If you are in a small space or just need to take your swing more places there are space saving swings made now.

Trimming Nails

It is very difficult to trim baby's nails the first year. I have known more than one mom that has nicked the baby's skin trying to trim nails. These nail trimmers mentioned will help with that problem. Some moms bite the nail off!!!

What Baby Really Needs

No matter what you have bought or received for your new baby the most important thing you can give her is your unconditional love. Try not to get too caught up on the small things because she will only remember your love.

Moms tend to get caught up on being perfect be it breast feeding, what kind of diapers she uses, etc. but love always comes first . Please relax and enjoy your new little one. There is no such thing as a perfect mom!!!!! None of us are perfect . We each have different gifts and talents and children will appreciate each one.
