The term "redshirting" comes from the college athletics practice of benching freshmen to extend their eligibility--the first year serves as training and preparation to play for four successful years.  It's now used to describe the increasingly popular practice of holding back five-year-olds from kindergarten for a year--usually because the child is not quite academically or socially mature enough to handle a structured kindergarten schedule or curriculum.

Red shirt freshmen are collegiate players that are not actually playing in games. The term is for players who are intentionally sitting out of the games to reserve their eligibility.
