This is a little challenging. I don't know what information you have on your father but the 'free' part will be a little bit of a problem. I say that because you will most likely have to order something (I.e. - birth certificate). The Internet is definitely a great resource. I have located a couple of people but it took a couple of years an around $40. Start with googling his whole name, if you have it. Zabasearch.com is a good site. You can use the process of elimination by guessing his age, approximately 20-25 years older than you are. Look for names of parents or sibling that you may know. If you know where he lived you may be able to go to the library and search records. I had a little bit of information like birthday and social security. Any unique information will be very helpful in narrowing down searches. I hope this will get you started.
Put in a search online for his name and any names of close relatives. It is amazing how much you can get free on the Internet. There are companies that will try to get you to send payment but you can do it yourself.
If you know what state or better yet city you can sometimes find public records through government offices. If he owns property it will be easier to track him down.
Sometimes you'll find news articles, Facebook pages of nieces or cousins that know how to get in touch.
Keep thinking of any family members you can recall and try those names too.

Do you confide in people completely or hold a little bit back?I always think it’s better to hold something back about oneself, (when not talking to close family) so, if anything goes wrong, you don’t feel vulnerable...
