I think it is depend on the state. But it seems to be recommendation age is 12.
It's true, the actual minimum age varies from state to state, but here in Ohio where I live the minimum legal age is 14. So if you're worried about Children Services screaming abandonment, it's best to make sure that any child home alone is, at least, 14 years of age.
