As a child which do you remember more, birthday presents or vacations? Any particular reason why?
Family vacations over gifts! The reason for me has to do more with quality time with loved ones being more important than receiving a gift that's a material possession, regardless of the occasion. The only exceptioin I suppose for me were if the gift were a live animal - but that would be because I'm relational.
Vacations. Because they were always better. We would go to so many places and traveling is something my family always indulged in regularly. Instead of asking on New Years, "what can I accomplish this year" my dad would always ask, "where can we go?".
Truthfully, I remember a few gifts but I think I remember every vacation. We used to take short vacations, just a few days. We lived in So. Calif. so fairly close to Disneyland. My mom would take me and my best friend to Disneyland. We would get a motel and spend the day at Disneyland and the next day playing in the pool at the motel.
It was brief but very memorable when we took those little vacations.
I think some of the best vacations are short getaways because they are such a stress reliever and are not filled with time crunching agendas My favorite vacation was supposed to be a weekend at the beach which turned into a 1200 mile trip to Papas.
Vacations. Probably because we didn't take very many so the ones we did take were very memorable.
Vacations have always been more memorable because new discoveries leave a clearer imprint on my brain. Our family getaways usually involved travel to places we'd never been before, and my husband and I like to follow that tradition with our daughter. Even when we travel to see relatives and friends, we make a point of experiencing something new and fresh.

In MY line of work, I meet all manner of types of parents, some worthy of praise while others should have their parental rights questioned. As a parent, what advice would you give to ensure (or at least create the likelihood) that you a good child?
