How can you help kids become mentally stronger and tougher in the face of adversity?
I think these are lessons best taught by experiences. They would have to be shown challenging situations either in stories, movies, or in life. They would have to see weak choices and strong choices and asked what they think, what they would do, and why. They would have to see the value in the hard road and the hardship in the 'easy' road.
I think the best way is to lead by example. Children are like sponges and they are learning all of the time by watching and observing the people who surround them. Let them know by example how to behave in a crisis and in adversity.
Life experience will eventually hand them some adverse situation and you will be there to support them.
