The witty untold side of being a stay at home mother.

Updated on November 8, 2012

There are very few things that are brought to light about being a stay at home mom. There are several benefits of being a stay at home mother but also there is the humorous downside part of it. For instance:

The schedule of a stay at home mom is never consistent. As much as you try to follow and stick to a certain timetable, chances are that it will be slightly impossible especially if you have babies and toddlers in the house. Your activities will be at many times disrupted or postponed due to you having to attend to your kids issues like cleaning up, soothing, chasing after your little offspring all around, or trying to solve a conflict between your kids.

A stay at home mom will spend most of her daily time picking up things from the floor and cleaning up after her kids. Yes, your back should be ready for the task ahead as you will spend quite some time picking toys and other items from the floor, cleaning up the mess your babies create, and this is not once a day activity, you will get to do it several times a day.

Facials, pedicures and manicures. You have to say bye to these three luxuries for quite some time, unless you get a friend or family who will babysit for you as you head to the spa. Anyway, you will not be needing lots of facials since your face will a dumping site for split milk, saliva, food and the like, what your face needs at this period of staying at home is just plain water and soap if need be. But what about manicures and the peds? You could actually go for it but they will last till you get home and then as soon as you get to diaper changing, laundry and cleaning up, the manicured hands will have been long forgotten.

The marriage sex life. A stay at home mother is at times a very tired woman just needing to get into bed and sleep soundly uninterrupted at the end of each day. So it goes without saying that the sex life for some mothers who stay at home will be the least of their priorities and you cannot blame them. They spend the whole day looking after the children, cook, clean, run around the house and later in the evening is expected to attend to her husband’s needs. That is so challenging, in my own view I do not know where I would gain the energy to still be active for my hubby at night.

No tidier house. It is a fact that once your baby becomes a toddler you have to forget about the tidy house you once had, with toys thrown all over, food all over, a stay at home mother is always on her toes to try maintain the tidiness of her home, and trust me it will not be easy as you will have other important stuff to do other than tidying up the house.

Postponed showers and interrupted nature calls. Having a long, warm and soothing bath is a far away luxury to many stay at home moms, and enjoying your nature calls uninterrupted will become a thing of the past. I will not indulge further into this since it is motherhood at its best.

A soft low voice never works for mothers who have toddlers or other children of different ages. Yes, you have to up your game if you want to have a proper grip on your kids, this means a relatively louder voice than you had before. A loud voice does not mean yelling and screaming though at times you have the urge to do so, it means you show your kids that you are the one in authority and in charge.

Always look in the mirror before getting out of the house. Your hair may be messed up or has some dirt like colored string on it, your face may have some food or split up that you are definitely unaware of.

Your body not yours anymore. A stay at home mom knows this very well. But this applies to all mothers, your body is no longer your body, your baby will be all over your bosom and your partner will also want a share on your body too. Your body will become a punching bag and a scratching pad to your kids.

You do not need fancy clothes if you are a stay at home mother unless for those occasions when you are going for those rare dates with your hubby or friends. All you need are t-shirts and baggy pants. Clothes that will be comfortable for you as you make countless trips around the house. And why bother ironing your clothes, they will be creased and smudged with dirt and food before the day is even mid.

No need for registering to a gym, you will be doing a lot of kneeling and crouching as you try to get things from under the seats, beds, drawers and other equipment. You will also get to run around trying to get to your mischievous kid. And thus with all the activity and moving around, there is absolutely no need to go to a gym.

I do not know about you but to me stay at home mothers should be greatly appreciated and should be given a break from their daily life once in a while.

These things are totally part of becoming a mom... So hard yet so fulfilling. I just don't know how we moms do these things. Cheers!

I tend to relate with you, but the smiles from our little ones that lights up our lives with so much joy is so much worth than all what we have to give up to stay at home and be with them

You are right, so many things a woman cherished before becoming a mom are not of importance any more once she is a mom. It is good to realize my messy house is not the only one and it is a norm when you have kids. I used to have a spotless, super organized home, all this is a memory now.
