Anyone can make these treats!

Anyone that knows me can tell you I am not a chef by any stretch of the imagination. I've had numerous recipes go wrong for me. When I find a recipe that is extremely easy and fool proof, it is a magic moment for me. That is why I would like share this sweet and salty recipe with you.

I've seen this recipe all over the place, and there are many variations to it. I will tell you about my variation of it that I've created through trial and error. It seems to work best for me and since I have no real talent as a cook, I would like to share this with others. This is the perfect fun, fast treat to make if you are going to a party and you need to make something. Most people enjoy it since it is both salty and sweet at once. Also, people usually think you spent more time on it than you really did. You only have to tell them the truth if you want.

The ingredients are very basic:

  • One bag of Snyder's "Snap" Pretzels (looks like little mini-waffles)
  • Medium bag of Peanut M & M's
  • One or two bags of Hershey Hugs or Cookies N Cream Kisses

Preparing for the treats

The first thing you want to do is set the oven at 275 degrees. The oven can heat up while you get prepared.

Second, line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. This makes the clean up easy.

Next, place the pretzels on the cookie sheet on top of the foil. I prefer to place the pretzels salted side down. It makes the treats taste better instead of blending the salt with the chocolate.

Last, you unwrap all the Hershey Hugs or Hershey Kisses. This is actually the most time consuming part of the process. If you have a child that really wants to help you, ask the child to unwrap all the Hugs or Kisses. Trust me, you will be grateful to have the help if you are baking a lot of treats.

Hugs and Kisses

By the time you've got everything prepped, the oven is probably ready to go. If not, you are obviously a much faster "Kiss or Hug Unwrapper" than I will ever be.

Now you can put each Hug or Kiss on each pretzel. In the photo, I've included both Hershey Hugs and Hershey Cookies N Cream Kisses. Because of the consistency of these Hugs and Kisses, they work perfectly together. If you really want all chocolate, you can certainly use a traditional Hershey's Kiss. However, you do not want to combine them with the Hugs or Cookies N Cream Kisses. Wait and do those on their own since they will need a little extra time.

Once all the Hugs and Kisses are on the pretzels, you can put the tray in the oven. For Hugs and Cookies N Cream Kisses, the time is 2 minutes at 275 degrees. If you are using traditional Hershey Kisses, the time is 3 minutes at 275 degrees. While waiting for the Hugs and Kisses to melt, open your bag of Peanut M & M's.

Fun with M & M's

When the time is up, take the tray out and IMMEDIATELY squeeze each Peanut M & M down on each Hug or Kiss. Don't squish them too much or the candy will ooze all over the place. Just a light squeeze will do.

The best part of using M & M's for any holiday treat are the color options. You can use the colors according to whatever holiday you are celebrating. M & M's often come out with special holiday colors for each celebration. So make sure to color coordinate the M & M's for your event.

Once all the M & M's are squeezed onto the treats, you want to put the tray in the refrigerator. After about an hour or two, your treats should be ready to enjoy. When you do take them out of the fridge, they do not need to go back in. You can easily fill up a bowl and snack on them for a while. This is what makes them perfect for parties. So the next time you need to fix a fast, easy treat for any celebration, you can grab these simple ingredients and create a tasty salty and sweet treat. Enjoy!
