Cheap Menus for Cheap Students
Maharajah – Also known as Prashad Café
Now that I have my restaurant I need to find a way to judge the food and also the cost overall.
This Restaurant and any other future restaurants I decide to critique.
Will be judged in the following:
- The atmosphere of the restaurant. (3)
- Serves (3)
- Menu Price ranges (2)
- Time (in making and serving the food) (3)
- Food quality (4)
The Restaurant will then get an overall score out of 15 that can be easily compared to any futures places.
Entering the Den!
Walking into the Restaurant, with my Trusty Photographer Rushil Chapaner, I was immediately hit with the place’s warm and cosy atmosphere. We were given the option for a sit-down or takeaway meal, having options is always handy, the restaurant is laced with bronze piping and accents. All the dark tones completing the comfy feeling.
The menu is small but doesn’t disappoint having the option for starters, main and dessert. The Main menu gives you the option to choose from Curries, Breyani, Wraps and Bunny Chows. Prices ranging between R55 and R85.
What I ordered.
I order three meals, two of which are vegetarian: Butter beans Bunny Chow, and Mixed Vegetable Breyani (the Most popular meal in its category and finally the Butter Chicken Curry (the Most popular meal in its category). All the meals were ordered in Mild as my poor tongue can only take that much. If you are braver than me there are two other options Medium and Hot.
The Wait ...
Surprising enough I didn’t have to wait for very long before the food was delivered, and the food remained warm even after my Photographer took all the amazing photos of the food. The quantity of the food surprised me as I didn’t expect so much for the price. Serves was great but once it got busier it was hard to get the waiter's attention to get the bill, the small restaurant could use a little more staff.
Butter Bean Bunny Chow
Butter Bean Bunny Chow R55.00:
The bread felt freshly baked as it was very soft and together with the beans and soft potatoes it completely melted in my mouth, the sauce was rich in flavour and very creamy. Consistency was great as I didn’t feel like I was eating soup. The portion size could easily be shared between two people.
Butter Chicken Curry
Butter Chicken Curry R85.00:
My favourite out of all of them. The meal came in two separates bowls, allowing me to dish for myself. The chicken is served in small soft thin pieces accompanying it a very sweet sauce, even though it was ordered in a Mild I didn’t taste the spice as much which is perfect for me. The meal is very light but still filling, a hard combination to find, the portion size is big however don’t think I would easily share it with anyone else.
Mixed Vegetable Breyani
Mixed Vegetable Breyani R85.00:
The quantity surprised me as it is by far the largest amount out of all of them and yet it had the least amount of sauce to accompany the mountain of mixed vegetable rice. The rice was delicious and cooked in such a way that I didn’t mind the vegetable, don’t know about you but usually avoid them like the plaque, the sauce was good, it wasn't sweet like the curry, it had more of a sour undertone but complemented the rice well. This just added insult to injury as there wasn't much sauce to go around.
