Healthy Butter Alternative: Smart Balance Butter Blend Sticks

Updated on November 22, 2010

Looking for a healthy alternative to butter? While there have long been a number of butter alternatives available in tubs, preparing recipes that call for stick butter has previously required cooks to rely solely on real butter.

That's all changed, now that Smart Balance Inc. has introduced Smart Balance® Butter Blend Sticks, made with half real butter and half Smart Balance® Buttery Spread. The convenient stick form makes it easy to reduce the saturated fat and cholesterol in all types of recipes, including baking. If you've enjoyed eating and cooking with Smart Balance® Buttery Spread, you'll be very pleased with this new product.

Benefits of Smart Balance® Butter Blend Sticks

Smart Balance® Butter Blend Sticks are the perfect choice for consumers who want to pursue a healthier diet and lifestyle. According to Greg Venner, executive vice president and chief consumer officer for Smart Balance, Inc., "The new Smart Balance® Butter Blend Sticks provide the great flavor and qualities of butter, in a healthier form. From cookies and cakes to sautéed vegetables, healthier baking and cooking has never been tastier or more convenient."

When you cook with this healthy alternative to butter, you'll enjoy the flavor and texture of real butter, but will benefit from a twenty eight percent reduction in saturated fat and a 50 percent reduction in cholesterol, as compared to real butter.

Additionally, you'll enjoy the health benefits of increasing your consumption of healthful Omega-3 fatty acids, which play an important role in promoting cardiovascular health. Most Americans don't get enough Omega-3 in oils in their diet, so this ingredient contributes greatly to the health benefits of Smart Balance® Butter Blend Sticks.

Most American diets are high in Omega-6, but deficient in nutritionally essential Omega-3. Scientific evidence continues to build that Omega-3 improves cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of heart disease, particularly DHA and EPA Omega-3.

I agree with SE; does this product contain artificial butter flavor, or other such nonsense?

I was disappointed in this review. How do you review a product without including the ingredient list? What exactly is a butter spread and what does it contain?

I recently found a new butter substitute called MELT. I found it at my local health food store and was pleasantly surprised with the taste and the health benefits. The main ingredient is virgin coconut oil, which apparently increases metabolism and promotes cardiovascular health. I am truly impressed by this product, has anyone tried it?

I've tried this product and was so glad the "butter" companies got SMART. We've needed this healthier alternative to satiate our craving for flavor and "fat." thanks for the great information about this product, I learned a lot!

I just started using this product and it is great. It works so well in baking, much better than stick margarine. Great review
