How to Make an Easy 7-Layer Dip
7-Layer dips are fun to make, and even more fun to eat!
This is another one of those amazing appetizers, next to my Easy Peasy Creamy Deviled Eggs of course, that is always requested and always loved by everyone.
From this entire platter, that serves at least a party of 24-30 people a few scoops of dip each, we came home with only about a cup and a half left from an 8 person party. lol
And my husband and I killed that the next day!
Not only do you get to feel like a kid splashing around a great deal of toppings to make an attractive but delicious party dip for your friends, but it is just as good going down.
There are so many possible toppings for this dip, and I'm sure you have some ideas that have never even been considered before.
- refried beans
- sour cream
- taco seasoning
- guacamole
- salsa
- onions
- olives
- shredded cheese
- shredded lettuce
- tomatoes
- chives
. . . are just a few of the many choices you have for this amazing dip!! Let's get started on making one of these fun dishes for yourself!
Cook Time
Ingredients
- 1 (15oz) can refried beans
- 1 (16oz) tub sour cream
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 3 large avocados, (Quick and Easy Creamy Guacamole Dip)
- 2/3 cup salsa
- pinch salt
- 2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 small yellow onion, chopped
- 2 cups shredded cheese
- 1 very large (or 2 medium) tomato, chopped
Instructions
- Start with a very large platter. One that is bigger than 12 inches in diameter is exactly what you're looking for!
- Open up a can of refried beans, no need to cook them first, and spread the whole can evenly across the bottom of the platter, to the very edges.
- Open up your container of sour cream, dump out the whole thing on top of your beans, and spread it evenly across the top.
- Make sure to leave enough showing on the edges so everyone can see all of the layers.
- Now sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning, any brand, on top of your sour cream. If you would prefer to have more, use at your own discretion.
- Lightly spread it into your layer of sour cream so no one gets a powdery mess when scooping into your dip later.
- Next, using my "Quick and Easy Creamy Guacamole Dip," make your guacamole with at least 3 large avocados, and spread this layer on top of your sour cream and taco seasoning.
- Don't forget plenty of lemon juice so that your guacamole doesn't turn brown before the party.
- Make sure to leave enough showing on the edges so everyone can see all of the layers.
- I wanted to spread a layer of salsa over the guacamole, but my husband said that there was already salsa in the guacamole. lol
- So instead I spread on a layer of chopped onions I had set aside from another recipe.
- With your shredded cheese, finish off your dip by spreading a thick layer over the top of all of your other layers.
- Finally, garnish with a layer of chopped tomatoes for color
- Serve with plenty of tortilla chips. Doritos make great scoops as well!!
- Yummy! Yummy!

One of the most fun things about making this dish is that you can be creative.
So you wold rather it have 13 layers rather than just 7, go for it! You want to make it vegetarian? That's fine too!
I really like being able to dump an entire container of anything onto a plate and smear it around with a spatula. It makes me feel like a kid again playing with clay and paints! But this project is much more delicious. lol
Black olives, salsa, and chives normally make an appearance on this popular dish, but we don't like olives, my husband didn't want salsa, and I didn't have any chives on hand.
Cheddar cheese is also a large feature on top of this platter, but we use white cheese in most of our recipes because of it's lower fat content. Make it your own!
