Ice Cream Churns and Easy Ice Cream Recipes

Updated on August 30, 2013

American recipes for homemade ice cream

Americans love homemade ice cream, so you'll find lots of tasty American recipes for ice creams. Nothing screams summer like a churn of homemade ice cream! And the times of hand churning a batch of the luscious frozen treat are long gone. Today’s electric ice cream churns make turning out a couple of quarts of creamy decadence a snap! And with the new ice cream mixes, you won’t even have to cook the custard. Just add whole milk to the powdered mix, stir well, and freeze.

There are several good mixes on the market, but we always use the Rival brand from Walmart. All you have to do with this mix to make 2 quarts of ice cream is add 4 cups of whole milk, stir, and freeze. To make the dessert creamier and richer, we always substitute heavy cream for part of the milk. The Rival ice cream mix comes in several different flavors, but I like to use the vanilla as a base. I then add other ingredients to create my own flavors.

Peach – Puree fresh peeled peaches in the blender or food processor and add to freezer. Use about 1 ½ cups of puree.

Caramel apple – Add one can of apple pie filling to freezer. When ice cream is ready to eat, add caramel topping to taste and blend through the ice cream.

Fudge ripple – Add cool fudge topping when ice cream is ready to eat. Stir spoonfuls of the fudge gently into the vanilla ice cream. If you put the fudge in while the blades are mixing the ice cream, you’ll wind up with chocolate ice cream.

Banana split – When ice cream has finished freezing, add cool fudge topping, strawberry topping, pineapple topping, chopped nuts, and maraschino cherry halves. For the bananas, you can either puree them or add slices.

Blackberry – Add 1 ½ cups of blackberry puree to the freezer. Be sure to use only very ripe berries. If you want your ice cream sweeter, just add a little more sugar before freezing.

Butter pecan – Sautee one cup of chopped pecans in one tablespoon butter until nuts are brown. When cool, add the melted butter and nuts to the freezer, along with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and ½ teaspoon salt.

Fourth of July – Add one can of blueberry pie filling to freezer. When ready to serve, top with maraschino cherries or a spoonful of cherry pie filling and a dollop of whipped cream for a red, white, and blue dessert.

Chocolate chip – The kids love this one! Just stir chocolate chips into the frozen ice cream. The mini-chips work best.

Oreo cookie – Finely crush Oreo cookies and mix them by hand into the frozen ice cream.

Below are several ice cream churns or ice cream freezers. If you enjoy cookouts, pool parties, picnics, or any outdoor summer get-togethers, I assure you that buying an ice cream freezer will be a great investment! We use ours all the time in the summer, whenever the kids come over to swim. Sometimes we buy cones for the kids, which they consider a really special treat.
