Quick and Simple Homemade Biscuit Mix
Commercial biscuit mixes save time by creating simple biscuits for any meal fast and easy. But they are also expensive, and oftentimes filled with preservatives or unneeded ingredients. Here is a recipe for a biscuit mix that you can prepare at home. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 weeks.
Homemade Biscuit Mix Recipe
- 6 cups pre-sifted all purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 cup shortening
- Sift the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until you get a finely ground, even product.
- Place in an airtight container until later use.
Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe (Using Above Mix)
- 2 1/4 cups prepared homemade biscuit mix
- 3/4 cup milk
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Place biscuit mix in a mixing bowl. Add in the milk and mix until a soft ball develops. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and knead about 10 times.
- Roll dough out to about 3/4 inch thick, then cut out rounds for biscuits.
- Place on a baking sheet. Place farther apart for crusty biscuits, and close together for soft biscuits.
- Bake until done. Serve warm.

- 2 1/4 cups prepared homemade biscuit mix
- 1/2 grated Cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup milk
- Follow the recipe above, but stir the Cheddar cheese into the dry ingredients until all combined. Serve with homemade jams as a snack, or for breakfast or dinner with the meal.
