Just a preview...

Get the feel of going to Subway from within your own home!

The amazing part about this wonderful meal is that it is almost like going to Subway for dinner. The toppings and flavors you want on the finished products are to meet your specifications, and what is even better, if you have picky eaters, like I have in my own home, then they too can create a sandwich they love!

When dinner needs to be easier

While I do work from home, I still have long hours because I have to make myself available. Recognizing this, the slow cooker has become an amazing choice when wanting to have dinner ready for my family, even if I am having to work late and do not have the time to prepare a great home-cooked meal. Recognizing this, I also have to become creative. My family loves the hoagie style meals and also chicken. Building on these two points, I had to begin searching out the ideal recipe to compliment each person's taste, time and still have something that would be amazing.

The search for buffalo hoagies seemed like a natural, and as I dug through the murky mess of recipes, I discovered a combination of three or four different ones which helped me create the taste I was looking for, while also meeting all the likes and dislikes of my family. The following will be a quick overview of the one which I have discovered works amazingly within my own home.

On top of this, like so many slow cooker meals, the flavor is absolutely amazing and the aroma filling the home throughout the day only helps to build the anticipation for the meal ahead. I will say, each person has a different taste, and recognizing this, play with the recipe a little and who knows you may find something that you like better! This is just what works in our home and has become a favorite that was created from three or four different recipes! I hope you enjoy and look forward to any comments or ideas you may have!

How Long?

Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 7 hours
Ready in: 7 hours 15 min
Yields: Serves four six-inch hoagies

So What Do I Need?

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 c. buffalo wing sauce, (Nutritional information is based on Moore's - Buffalo Wing Sauce)
  • 1/2 of 1 oz pkg Hidden Valley Dry Ranch Mix
  • 2 tbsp. butter, melted
  • 4 6-inch hoagie buns, (can use hamburger buns or even fajita wraps!)

So What Do I Need to Do?

  1. Place the chicken breast in the slow cooker (either lightly spray or line with a liner), the ranch dressing mix, and 1/2 of the buffalo wing sauce.
  2. Cover and cook on low 7 hours. (Please note, if your chicken is frozen, will need to increase to 9 hours).
  3. Once the chicken has cooked, add the butter, and shred the meat finely with two forks.
  4. Pile the meat onto the hoagie rolls, and splash with the remaining buffalo wing sauce to serve.
  5. If you want to add toppings, have some sides available: coleslaw, ranch dressing, lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, onions, etc.

What Compliments This Meal?

Okay, since this is a sub/hoagie, chips or fries have become the preferred option in our home. That being said, I love coleslaw (I am the only one), celery, or apples; corn on the cob; and even a small side salad.

Another great idea is to include the coleslaw on the hoagie itself!

I normally dress my own with pepper jack cheese, a touch of ranch dressing and a few slices of pickles. Then to the side a small serving of coleslaw and either baked chips or celery sticks. My husband and his kids prefer to have chips only on the side, and usually prefer provolone for the cheese on their hoagie. Its a personal choice! Have fun with it!

A Little Thought

Please remember, the nutritional information does not include the use of cheese, other than the one contained in the recipe, or any other toppings or sides you may elect to use. This is merely the recipe for the ingredients included in the slow cooker ingredients.

Also, if you use a different wing sauce or add some toppings, this too can alter the nutrional information. I have simply utilized the tool to determine the values based on the ingredients I use personally.

Also, as both my husband and I have wheat allergy, this recipe is based on white bread, not wheat.

"Food For Thought"

Another great idea to enhance the flavor of your chicken is include 6-8 oz of your favorite beer in the slow cooker for seven hours! I do include this ingredient but was not aware of the nutritional value and elected to just include the idea as a side note. The beauty of adding the beer is an even more aromatic and flavor dish!

Here shortly, I will attempt to begin adding videos of the meals as I make them, just staying so busy between work and school that it can be difficult to find a few extra minutes to do this!
