Figs can be traced back to ancient Egypt and are one of the oldest known fruits. The majority of all figs are sold dried, less than 10 percent of figs reach the market fresh.
They were brought to California by the Spaniards and most are still grown in California. The most common fig found in the market is the Calimyrna. Figs are pollinated by a small fig wasp and if pesticides kill the wasps then you have no more figs.
Dried figs have 17% more calcium than milk but are very high in calories for their size.
Is It True That Figs Can Tenderize A Steak
It is a fact that figs have the ability to tenderize meats. Fresh figs have the chemical "ficin" which is a proteolytic enzyme one that is capable of breaking down proteins with a similar action to that of " papain " from papayas or " bromelain " from pineapples.
If you add fresh figs to a meat stew they will tenderize the meat in the stew.
Fig Juice is a natural laxative and the juice is good for skin irritations and the gout.

Any fig-eating vegans out there?I don't eat meat, but I do like figs. However, I haven't been able to eat them since I heard about the wasps. (Don't Google this if you like figs and want to keep eating them).
