The world's most expensive cheese is called "pule," and is made in Serbia from donkey milk. It costs 1,000 euro per kilogram or 500 US dollars per pound. There are a few factors that make the price tag so high:

    1. It is only produced in one place, the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, where there are only 100 donkeys.
2.There are no machines suitable for donkey milking, so it must all be done by hand.
    3. It takes 25 litres of donkey milk to make 1 kg of cheese. In terms Americans understand, that means 3 gallons of milk for every pound.
    4. Depending on where you live, the shipping and/or taxes may be very expensive.

Thanks for your response. That is quite a humble and unexpected source of my favorite dish. Lots of respect for the source
