The guidelines for the daily consumption of salt changed and dropped 20%. What does this mean to you and family. What are you changing?
For myself, I am reading the labels much closer - seeking out the percentage of the daily salt and next checking the sugar levels.
I consumed a frozen meal the other day - I thought it tasted salty and I found when I read the label, it contained 43% of my daily salt! Any similar surprises you can share?
Well, I try to eat less processed food. There is so much salt in those meals, especially the low-fat ones.
I am similar, hardly ever eat processed foods. I actually love a good home cooked meal and my husband is the best cook I have known. He says, wanna go to a restaurant for our anniversary, and it's like hell no, I want you to cook for me!
I don't know anything about government suggested salt levels, but I do know that, like UW says, processed foods have incredibly high levels of both salt and sugar. When you think about it, the processed foods industry must be one of, if not the, biggest industries in the world! Is it any surprise that they may control governments?
I avoid processed foods like the plague...though I have been known to give in and have a treat maybe once or twice a year...OK maybe more often because they do taste nice and are convenient.
I was on the Atkins diet for a year a few years back, and I felt great on it!
No processed foods meant every system in my body worked better.
It was no surprise to me that Atkins got slated - he threatened to destroy an industry. The sheer amount of salt and sugar in processed foods is frightening. If you don't believe me, read the labels.
Not doing anything about it.
I don't like ready made frozen or tinned foods, so very rarely I eat that.
I usually have home cooking, eat a a restaurant (where I cannot control salt intake) or if I am home alone I just have porridge and fruits.
To be honest I don't worry about salt intake. Sugar is what worries me.
I don't concern myself with any guidelines, so it means nothing to me and my family.
I just try to eat as healthy as I can, but I won't neglect myself treats from time to time... so, I probably won't be changing much.
I will say, though, I'm not the biggest salt "fan" in the first place. And (this may sound odd), I don't actually like the taste of it LOL. Everyone makes fun of me, because I add salt to NOTHING. Like even when I cook pasta... or make homemade potatoes. Just not crazy about it.
